“Excellent Staff, Fab Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2010

Having spent ages finding trying to find a place to stay in San Francisco, we were looking good hotel, that is cheap, in a good location and is clean. We were in San Francisco during Naval week, so as you can imagine most places were fully booked, and the places available had their prices inflated. We found Touchstone Hotel and what a find!!! The location was excellent, just a stone throw away from Union Square. The rooms were better than i expected. Very modern and clean. The only grip was they were very small, not much room to move around. The bathroom was a bit on the small side, and also becasue we had a street facing room, it did on occasions get noisy. But this didn't cause us any problems. The staff were fantastic, so freindly and helpful. The staff gave this hotel a more personal touch, they were interested in what you had to say and couldn't have been more helpful. This hotel is great, and for the price and absolute bargain!!!

The hotel was selected based on the reviews on Tripadvisor. It is located in the centre of city. You can use BART to get there from the airport. Avoid walking in Tenderloin and 6th street areas. The neighbourhood is full of restaurants, shops and car rentals. Generally we noticed that it is quite expensive area to dine that was no surprise. Also the beer was overpriced and there are no grocery stores nearby to buy it except Deli’s with double price. We have heard a number of similar comments from the other people. Surprisingly the hotel charged us the whole amount when we checked in. Because the hotel was full at time of booking we booked the room with two queens. Unfortunately our room had windows that come to Geary street. It was very noisy whole night and we had to sleep with earplugs. So when you book bear in mind that all two queen rooms have windows on the street. After two days we changed to one queen room (which was fine with us) with the windows to backyard. Special thanks to Erik on the reception. He was particularly helpful during all our stay – we can’t say the same about another shifts. The walls are quite thin so you can hear almost everything happening next room. The cleaning of the room could be better and we believe the real improvement is required. The sink in our room didn’t function properly but it didn’t create that much problem for us as oppose to the person who cleaned our room every day. But nevertheless nobody fixed it during our stay. We were provided with 25% discount for all meals in nearby cafeteria. But don’t be surprised if you order and wait for twenty minutes and no food comes because it was never passed to the kitchen.

Overall we got more then expected from our stay in Touchstone. Great value for money. Almost all our stay the hotel was full of French that proves our previous statement J

On business trips, I often stay on big chains hotels. It is a way to prevent bad surprises.
But on this travel to San Francisco I decided to give this one a chance, due to the reviews I read here.
And it was actually a great experience: the room was okay, the staff was helpfull and the location could not be better.
Will definitively stay on touchstone on the next times: way way better than hotel chains on the same price range

This hotel was old school but charming. The rooms were small but very clean. Internet was free and there was valet parking available for about $28 a night. Our only complaint was the noise. Walls are VERY thin and even at the back of the building there was quite a bit of street noise (from the back alley).

We took other reviewers word for it and passed on the $7 a person breakfast option at the restaurant next door. Instead we opted for a crepe place a couple blocks away and were very happy with it.

If you're looking for a more affordable San Francisco hotel experience and are willing to pass up on fancy and frills this is the place for you! It's right in the heart of the city and is within walking distance to a load of things!

Our room did not look like the other photos on here so we must have been in one of the cheaper rooms, however we paid $104 a night when a few people are saying they only paid $60 a night.

The room was tiny! We usually stay in budget hotels but this was one of the worse rooms I have seen. The bathroom was also tiny with a small shower and toilet and the sink was in the bedroom. The room was also dated- old tv with no cable. We didn’t have breakfast included but had I think a 20% off voucher for Dave’s deli next door.

I think the worst thing had to be our toilet blocked and room service had came in to make the bed and did nothing about it so we couldn’t use the toilet for the rest of the trip.
It very noisy when the theatre came out after a show which was across the road and I think it was a garbage truck at around 6am every morning woke us up.

The good points were- the reception were friendly and helpful. They booked a minibus which was much cheaper than a taxi back to the airport for us. The location was great you could walk or get a cable car everywhere.

I think if you get the right room you would love this hotel but if you get a bad room it’s not a good place to stay.

The staff was very friendly and extended themselves to be helpful and accommodating. The location perfect -- two blocks from Union Square, a couple more to Chinatown. We walked to two plays and had easy access to public transportation to get all over SF. Great value for the money!

We found the place to have character and the room something nice to come back to. It is an older hotel that has been well maintained. I will note that we could not get cell phone service inside the building and that there was no individual heat control that we saw. However, this did not cause any problems for us. We would highly recommend this hotel.

It's two blocks from the Union Square and a five minute walk to the main cable cars station. The hotel itself is basic and could be cleaner or less expensive. The place for breakfast didn't look appealing, so we never ate there. The bathroom is tiny, and the windows are not soundproof which in principle may affect your sleep. The good thing is that it's cheap (80$+tax) and perhaps the cheapest in the neighborhood.
