“Great Boutique Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

Warm and personal atmosphere. Negative issues by other reviewers were not experienced. Great complimentary breakfasts, cookies and wine and snacks. Met and enjoyed conversations with other guests at the evening wine and cheese event, something unlikely to happen in a hotel lounge or bar. Our fireplace room was compact but comfortable with a view onto a beautiful neighboring palm tree. Staff assistance when required was courteous, very helpful and friendly. Room and common areas clean and fresh. Well placed location for quick access to shopping, cable car line and points of interest. Would love to stay again.

Room Tip: Fireplace rooms a bit bigger. West side top floor at back has better view

We really enjoyed our stay at this very charming hotel. The staff was very nice and helpful, the room was quite comfortable, and the breakfast was delicious. It's a small establishment, which comes with its pluses (such as charm and character), and (at least from some people's point of view) minuses, such as lack of parking right on the premises. It's a matter of what one's looking for, and this is definitely a spot for those wanting something a bit different from a big hotel experience. We'd definitely stay here again.

The Marriott, it is not. And true, it is a little noisy in the city, and there is no one at the desk to attend to your every need. So why stay here?? Well, by day two of our 3 day stay, all the staff knew us. We enjoyed some great conversations with the other guests - something you never get in a large property. And the euro style breakfast and the evening happy hour provide more opportunity for interactions with others. The location - well, SFO is changing and the proximity to the Bart station a Powell, Muni stops and the iconic Cable Cars make this a great location for the independent traveler. True, if you want everything new and shiny - don't stay here. This is an aging boutique hotel that has it's size and charm as prime benefits. I counted 4 floors with 5 rooms per floor - so 20 couples at most. In a nutshell: PROS: personal experience, slow pace, privacy. CONS: ageing, tv's are hard to see in room - and yes, the other occupants can be heard. Will we go back - absolutely!!

Stayed here for the second half of our honeymoon trip. It's super charming and the staff are wonderfully friendly and helpful. Great location - close to Union Square but not too close. Quick walk to cable car pick up and bus routes too. The old style elevator was really neat!

Our room was very very tiny. We just had the basic room, but I didn't realize it was so small! The shower was also very "petite" and my 6'2" husband had a bit of a hard time maneuvering in it. I do agree with the other reviewers that the trash pickup/ (dump out?) at 7:30 am every morning is very noisy! The breakfast and wine hours were very nice. Great selection of foods. Also, there are several cafes nearby with cheap and delicious breakfast options as well.

Definitely happy with our stay but might look for another hotel next time due to price.

My wife and I recently stayed at Petite Auberge in San Francisco. It's wonderful! Close to streetcar lines, an easy walk downhill to the Ferry Building, Chinatown, etc. Best of all is the atmosphere: warm, cozy, good rooms, good food and the best 5 o'clock wine and hors d'erves going. We came back each day at 5 to join other guests in the "drawing room" complete with fireplace and comfy sofas for good wine and good food and good conversation. What a pleasant way to relax at the end of a sighseeing day before heading out to dinner. The free breakfast was also special--I especially liked the blueberry pancakes! I definitely recommend this hotel for your next stay in town. The price is quite reasonable and the staff and atmosphere can't be beaten. DEH and MBH.

I agree with pieces of many of the reviews here. The hotel does have more charm than the big chains nearby, is in a good location, and has a tasty breakfast and coffee service. It is true that for front desk service on one of the days, we had to head next door to its sister property (the front desk at Petite Auberge was staffed on the day of our arrival). Also, the building did not seem to be heated in the common areas, but being in SF, I do not think that is a big deal (also, being from Chicago, it did not qualify as "cold"), but some might want it a little toastier. Also, I would agree with some of the reviewers that talk about the noise in the rooms. The building is old and you do hear neighbors -- not voices, but more floors creaking when people are moving around. There also seems to be a garbage pick up or delivery that comes regularly every morning. We were used to the city noise living in a older apartment in Chicago that is only a block from the L, but if you are expecting no noise, you may be disappointed. We found the staff to be pleasant and helpful.

This hotel was chosen really due to it's reviews on here and fact that it was listed as a boutique hotel. Arrived here from San Jose around midday so as we were unable to check in we headed out to San Fran. The girl on reception was helpful without being impressive and the car we had was dealt with by the valet guy straight away.

When we returned at around 2am after a long, long day seeing San Fan we finally got to the the room. It was exactly as expected in that the decor was simple in a boutique style. Unfortunately the fire place that we had paid extra for didn't work and the room was freezing. The guy in reception at this time came up to try and sort it out but he was unsure what he was doing so given that we were taking about gas(!) we decided to leave it till the next day.

He headed to reception the following morning to sort it out and also express the fact that we were p!ssed off that we'd paid extra for this feature room and the 'feature' didn't work....no surprise when she just stared at us with relatively vacant expression. At which point we realised that this was beyond her thinking capacity.

The maintenance guy came up later on a sorted it out and it was worth getting sorted as it made the room after a long day pounding the streets.

Breakfast was good, pretty simple, continental, but enough to get you're fill for the day.

Finally, for some reason, everything for this hotel is dealt with next door at the the white swan, which is a bit inconvenient but not the end of the world.

Over all a decent stay, not really impressed by the staff but the hotel is nice and worth a look in at the right price.
