“Japanese inspired urban oasis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2013

I always love returning to the Hotel Kabuki. We've been staying here since it was the Miyako. The neighborhood is great, and relatively quiet at night. The hotel is attractive and very clean. The employees are extremely efficient and accommodating. There are two buildings, choices of room styles and different beds. There's a restaurant on site that makes a great breakfast buffet. There are lots of other restaurants in the neighborhood. It's about a 4 block walk to Yoshi's on Fillmore if you're in the mood for jazz. There's wonderful shopping on Fillmore and in Japan town. You can use the spa down the street. It's close to all my favorite places. Did I mention the deep Japanese soaking tubs? Just the remedy for tired bodies after a day of urban adventure! I also like the fact that Joie de Vivre is rated the 2nd best employer in SF....happy employees take very good care of their guests!

This hotel was extremely reasonably priced for San Francisco in the off season. We had a wonderful time and our room was great. Parking was easy to figure out and we were close enough to our destinations to walk.

Stayed here for one night, but loved it. The staff could not have been more helpful or accomodating. The lobby was nicely decorated, with a koi pond and garden area just outside. We were greeted quickly, with smiles and a willingness to answer all our questions. The room are decent sized, very clean and have everything you need. The whole "feel" of the hotel is that of a serene and tranquil setting. I would stay here again and would recommend it.

If you are visiting Japantown, this is the place to stay. Valet parking is expensive, but nice to have. There is also self-parking below the hotel for a reasonable price.

stayed at the Hotel Kabuki for a conference. check in was quick and easy. friendly staff. parking on the premises is limited, $40 daily with in and out privileges. additional parking available directly adjacent to the hotel (japan center parking), cost $24 daily. no in and out privileges, but basically cost comes out to $1/hour. so overall, better value. the hotel elevator will take you directly to the parking lot.

room was clean, bed quite comfortable.

only disappoinment was the fitness center which had quite dated equipment. very small center.

overall location was fine. away from the hustle and bustle of union square. more quiet at night. about a 20 minute walk to union square, chinatown, etc. would be more convenient to drive.

overall a good stay. only reason for the 4/5 rating is the small and dated fitness room.

nevertheless, would stay here again.

the people at the desk were nice and friendly. the doorman/valet was friendly. all the maids properly greet guests. the rooms are a bit older but well kept overall. I like the Japanese tub and shower area; very traditional Japanese style. The beds were comfortable too. $20 plus parking kinda sucks but it is SF and an expensive place. Overall I would recommend this hotel if you are on a budget and want something very decent for what you pay.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

We were visiting my friends in the Bay Area over the 4th of July, and we need a central place to stay. Hotel Kabuki is great location-wise, as it's less than 10 mins drive to the 101 & Bay Bridge, and less than 15 to the Golden Gate Bridge. It's a couple of blocks walk to Fillmore St, which has a ton of restaurants, bars, and stores to explore, and it's smack in the middle of Japantown, which has its own set of restaurants and attractions. Most importantly, there is a parking garage underneath the hotel if you cannot find street parking, which is most of the time.

As for the room, it's supposed to be designed in the Japanese style. Other than the sliding wooden shades and Japanese style bathroom (a tub next to the shower behind the glass), there wasn't much "Japanese" about it. This is not a knock, as I think most westerners would be shocked at how small real Japanese rooms are. Our room, however (a corner one), was huge. We could have easily had 10 guests over and been fine. They say there's a balcony, but it's just big enough to stand on. You get a great view of the city. And while you could sometimes here people in the hall, there weren't that many people, so noise really wasn't a problem.

Just FYI, the front desk may warn you about car break-ins parking on the street. We parked on the street near the hotel 3 out of the 4 nights, with a convertible, and had no issues. Just don't leave anything visible in the car that someone might break in for.

Bottom line: I'd definitely stay here again. I used a AAA discount to get a better deal.

Room Tip: Get a corner room for extra space and light

Thanks for being a guest of the Hotel Kabuki and for taking the opportunity to share your experience with us. I'm happy to hear that our prime location afforded you with ease of access to the many great sites of San Francisco. While we try to be cautious and warn guests about street parking, incidents are by no means common, and our neighborhood is as safe and welcoming as the hotel itself. I'm glad to hear that you found hospitality in them both, and we hope that you'll return to experience many of the great things we still have to offer!
