“Charming, Good Value, Fire Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2014

My husband and I stayed at the White Swan Inn for two nights. We found it on tripadvisor with a special rate. It was a great value for how big and nice the room was! The room was very nice & clean with an old & charming feel. We loved the fire place and the decor of the hotel! We also loved the complimentary drinks, breakfast, and wine hour, especially after staying at a hotel the night before that charged $3 for a bottle of water in the room. It was nice to feel like we weren't being taken advantage of but cared for and looked after. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The only problem we encountered was with the valet. They advise calling 20-30 minutes before you need your car. So the first time we called for our car 20-30 minutes before we needed it. However, the front desk forgot to call the valet so when we got to the lobby we had to wait 20 or so minutes, which made us late for dinner with friends of the family who we were meeting for the first time. The next day we called for our car and ended up having to wait 10 or so minutes even though we called 30 minutes before. This would not deter us from staying there again but would suggest calling 45-60 minutes ahead if possible to get your car if you don't want to wait in the lobby or be late for something...

Quiet & quaint stay in a bustling San Francisco! Staff was very accommodating. Appreciated the location & enjoyed the additional amenities: large room, nice breakfast and generous wine hour. We'll definitely consider the White Swan again when traveling to San Francisco!

A very cozy place, made even better by the wine hour and adorable breakfast. It's a great location. Personalized service by Andy, who was all over it!!! Little things like the toilet handle stuck and the elevator is a million years old, but you get more exercise that way! Overall, we'd stay here again.

We had a delightful two night stay at the White Swan Inn. A bed and breakfast in the heart of the city; a rare find. I would consider it a hidden gem of San Francisco. Very large, comfortable room with a beautiful gas burning fire place for ambiance. Breakfasts were over the top with selection and something for everyone from indulgent vacationers to health conscious disciplined types. Wine and appetizer reception each evening was another enjoyable experience and delicious cookies by the front desk each day. Hope we will have an occasion to stay at the White Swan Inn again someday.

White Swan is a delightful hotel. The rooms are quaint and wonderful with that special touch of home. The fireplace in the rooms was such a great element that truly makes you feel as if you were on a retreat in another country. Breakfast is fantastic and they have a wine and cheese hour that keeps you coming back for more. Centrally located to all stores, restaurants and Chinatown. White Swan is truly a diamond in San Francisco. We recommend anyone to stay at this lovely hotel.

We greatly enjoyed our stay here. The wine in the evening was excellent, and the breakfast was better then expected. The fireplace was a great addition to the room, easy to turn on. The only problem we ran into was the noise outside as the street was being worked on through the night.

UPDATE: The management of the White Swan has promised a refund of the cost of our last night's stay. A very fair offer which we much appreciate. Please note that we were not looking for a "monetary settlement" as such, but that any expression of regret on their part at the time of our stay would have totally changed our attitude...a cab voucher to the Wharf to give us something to do with our morning (which we had planned to spend sleeping), a bottle of wine - anything to acknowledge regret for our issues.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: Wow, this is a tough one. If you enjoy a B&B atmosphere over a large hotel (as we do), you will probably enjoy your stay at the White Swan, but we did NOT have a good experience. I want to be clear that the staff were all charming and accommodating. But we had one problem after another here. The location is great - a bit away from the bustle, but within easy (for SF) walking distance of shops, restaurants and transportation. Learning from other TA reviews, I booked a Luxury King and asked for the back of the hotel. Upon arrival, I learned I had requested room 42 - a surprise since I had never been to the place and didn't know room 42 from the broom closet. It was, of course, in the front, hanging out over Bush street. They did not have any Luxury Kings left in the back, so we happily downgraded to a Deluxe King. We expected a wee adjustment in the bill since this was a cheaper room, but that did not automatically happen. When we explained upon checking out, the clerk was unable to access our original reservation. When I showed it to him on my phone, he agreed to deduct $10 per night for the room change. All I will say about the breakfasts is that I enjoyed the fruit and coffee....the room was shabby, with torn curtains, rusted and stained bathtub and a sofa that sagged to the floor and poked vulnerable body parts with springs. But this didn't really bother us. The mattress and bed linens were new and we enjoyed being able to open the windows. HOWEVER, after a hectic day, we were looking forward to a late sleep on Sunday morning. Instead, we were literally thrown upright by the sound of (apparently) a herd of elephants playing basketball overhead at 7:30 AM. The stomping, crashes, screeches of things being dragged had to be heard to be believed. Then this incredible hammering started up. It was like being inside a drum. I called the front desk and was told they were replacing the carpet upstairs. (At 7:30 on a Sunday morning!) There was nothing to do but get up, get dressed and go down to breakfast. The Operations Director approached us to apologize for the inconvenience, saying they had warned the folks on the 5th floor but it had not occurred to them that it might bother the people directly below. So they were grateful that we brought a problem to their attention and they would now be notifying everyone. She offered us another room to nap in, but we were already up and dressed and there was no point in going back to bed. I have a video that contains the sound of the multiple hammers installing tack strips over our heads. It was truly the most awful head-splitting din I have ever heard. I thought the ceiling was going to come down on us. We thought they might offer some sort of tangible gesture for scaring us half to death, and making our room uninhabitable - but no.... nothing more was said. So, all I can say is use your own judgment or wait awhile until their renovations are complete!
