“Great Romantic Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2013

We were a little worried when we first arrived, but for no reason. Great Staff! Outstanding location! A perfect stop for a romantic get away! Sure the place is a little worn but that only adds to its charm! Loved the wine social and the breakfast. They went out of their way to make our 25th anniversary special

Had a very nice stay. Right in the middle of everything you need. Location was perfect for our needs. Food from fine dining to food truck within blocks and easy walks. Transportation of every kind is 2-4 block away. The wine reception at night was a blast with the your fellow guests. The front desk personal were knowledgeable and helpful for all our tour and information needs. The morning breakfast was exceptional and another way to meet your fellow guests and a perfect day starter. This was our first time in SF and would recommend the White Swan to everyone.

We stayed here for a four night getaway. The staff, Housekeeping, room, everything was wonderful. I'm glad we went in October since they don't have AC. Maybe it's never too hot in the summer in SF, it was my first visit. The buffet breakfast is free and a great way to meet other guests. It's downstairs in a beautifully decorated area. Everyone was so very nice and accommodating. We had a wonderful stay and look forward to returning.

Three blocks up from Union Square. The room was supposed to be 'old English', but we found it dingy and depressing, overlooking a wall and fire escape, perhaps we were just unlucky. However, on the positive, we enjoyed the evening complimentary drink and canapés - an opportunity to relax after a long day and meet other guests. Staff were friendly and very helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with light, perhaps back facing, away from traffic.

Apparently, I am used to European hotel room sizes which are tiny compared to American hotels. So I found the rooms amazingly large, some kind of a one-bedroom-flat. Which is great. Good coffee in the room, very good toiletries, and a safe fireplace. The decor is some kind of English-style, without being run down and small as many British Inns. And the furniture is not run down but well kept through the years. If you don't want to stay in one of the hotel towers at Union Square, try this one. Don't get me wrong, this is a great place to stay over but I have the impression that shabby-chic and 'boutique'-style hotels are somewhat overrated as they are compared against large hotel complexes in American cities, which are less frequent in Europe.

A very welcoming hotel in the heart of the city. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are airy and cozy, the beds are comfy, nice fireplace, windows that really open, breakfast was good, nice outdoor space, comfortable public areas, free wifi, in room coffee and tea and soft drinks, nice earl grey cookies, wine and nibbles in the late afternoon. This hotel is close to everything but a very quiet place to come back to and unwind.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the courtyard are quieter. Room 55 was perfect for us.

Like many other people, we struggled to find accommodation in San Francisco at a price that wasn't astronomical. Let's face it, the White Swan Inn is still blooming expensive, but it's a darn sight cheaper than most other alternatives. It's a sweet hotel in a good location, near downtown and Chinatown. The rooms were a little old-fashioned but quite fun in their resolutely 'English' decor, and we absolutely loved the English collectibles and memorabilia on display in the dining room. Breakfast was edible, but not memorable. For us, the real gem in this hotel is their staff. Everyone was friendly and courteous, but the real jewel in the crown was Brendan. He fixed us up with dinner reservations and a taxi, and was on hand to provide helpful tips and advice on anything we wanted. It felt like nothing was too much trouble. I wouldn't rush back for the hotel experience, but the quality of service was truly impeccable.
