“Romance on a downtown location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013 via mobile

Knowing we only would be in San Francisco a couple of nights, we wanted a clean, comfy, small and romantic hotel. The white swan inn promised to be that and more. What a treat to have so much freshly prepared food, a nice afternoon wine and finger food time in an old fashioned English style library. So relaxing after a day's hard work sightseeing...

If only the rates would be a tiny bit lower, we would be back in a heartbeat...

The friendliness and ambiance was wonderful. We were made to feel at home and part of the local community immediately. The room was spacious and very comfortable. The amenities were special and well thought out. The morning breakfast was delicious and varied with a special treat every day. The British decor in the public spaces was incredible and whimsical. The outside deck allowed for lovely relaxation at the end of a busy day. We felt completely at home.

Room Tip: Any room not facing the street.

Dear AcePutney,

Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience ot the White Swan Inn! I am especially thrilled to hear that you spent time relaxing on the garden deck. It is definitely a great way to wind down after a long day of exploring the city. We hope to welcome you back to your San Francisco home away from home very soon.

Warm regards,
Rebecca

Sometimes only a few words are needed to summarise a place and this is one of those times. Good value, great location, safe with little extras that speak volumes. The fireplace, the free mimi-bar, a big desk, free wine and food in the evenings, cable tv and large rooms. Plus the staff are always so polite and helpful. There are tiny little things like wear and tear that any hotel goes through, and its not exactly perfect but then again where is. This is a fine hotel and you won't go wrong. Don't hesitate just book it.

Room Tip: If you find stairs a hassle ask for a lower room as the elevator, while being beautiful and authenti...

If you are British it is an odd experience to stay here as it's a sort of Disney version of Olde England - wall displays that tell me that all English people drink tea every afternoon, models of cathedrals made out of matchsticks, cabinets full of teapots, biscuit tins, cricket bats, that sort of thing. But the hotel is decent, the rooms are large, the breakfast is excellent and the complimentary wine and nibbles hits the spot after a long day striding the streets of San Franscisco. The staff are helpful and the location is good for shops, dining, etc. - though if you luggage, it's a bit of a walk from Powell St BART.

Room Tip: Higher is better

We stayed here for 4 days and had a wonderful stay. A proper boutique hotel with large rooms and great service. Located close to Union Square and in walking distance to two different tram lines. You can't go wrong by booking at this hotel.

I prefer the quaint and quiet of small Inns and B&Bs and I have stayed in 100s of them. I have to rank my stay at White Swan in the top 5 along with Copper Beach Inn in Mystic, CT and Edwin K B&B in Florence, OR. Let's start with Cora at check in. She should be a training manager on customer service. We had two rooms 53 & 55 and they were large in comparison to other accommodations in the heart of San Francisco. The beds were comfy and I slept better than I usually do when I travel. Wine & cheese hour is my favorite because it's the best time to meet and talk with other guests. White Swan provides a conducive environment to relax and talk. We kept our "do not disturb" sign on our door, but the housekeeper left us a bag of towels for our second day. Thoughtful. Ella at check out was pleasant and helpful. Thank you everyone at White Swan!!

My wife and I celebrated our 26th anniversary at this B & B, and we were very happy that we chose this accomodation instead of the new hotels. It was quaint, charming, spacious room, very close to cable cars, restaurants, Union Square. We will definitely recommend and come back again. We also want to thank the staff for acknowledging our anniversary with a nice card and gift, that is so greatly appreciated. We wish the best for the White Swan Inn.

Room Tip: We had room on the 5th floor # 57, very nice. Buy a Muni pass for 1 ($ 14) or 3 days ($ 22), you can...
