“Rather a beautiful and warm home than a hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

If you are looking for a warm home in a Victorian Villa in San Francisco, at a TOP- location surrounded by nice restaurants, between Fishermans Wharf and Union Square, you should book a couple of nights in Washington Square Inn! We were staying in this wonderfully furnished building at the end of March for 4 nights.
Our room was not very big, but nicely furnished (antique) and with beautiful material. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom well equipped but also a bit small. As this Inn is more like a private house (only 15 rooms) than a hotel, and with extremely friendly and helpful staff, it did not bother us at all.

Breakfast is served in a room with a fireplace or as room service. Fresh fruit, yoghurt and pastries will wake you up decently. At the end of the afternoon, after a day of sightseeing, a lovely glass of wine and some tasteful snacks are served, and it gives the opportunity to meet some other guests and to share their experiences.

We were very pleased by the location of the Inn. Situated at Washington Square, a lovely park with Tai-Chi practising Japanese groups in the morning, each group with different -soft- music, gave a sense of peace and tranquility. From Washington Square you have many possibilities for public transportation. There are a lot of great restaurants in the direct neighborhood, and do go once to "the Saloon", the oldest bar in Frisco!

When you will have to leave this great place, we can recommend to take the hotel-cab to the airport. No pick up at other hotels, their very comfortable car will take you directly to the airport for 50 USD.

On the whole: We can highly recommand Washington Square Inn!!

Our three nights at the Washington Square Inn were totally enjoyable. What a wonderful oasis after a busy day exploring San Francisco. The "happy hour" wine and cheese reception was the perfect way to transition from a busy day to relaxing evening. The staff were friendly and helpful. We stayed in room 11, with a bay window view of Coit Tower. The room was a good size and very clean. The bathroom was a bit small but workable. We did not hear a single sound all night and we slept like logs. There are dozens of restaurants within walking distance - even without having to climb the hills! Breakfast was offered either in your room or in the lobby, with your selections made on a menu card the night before. It was a continental style breakfast but generous and perfectly filling. There is no doubt we will stay at the lovely inn again next time we are in San Francisco.

Nice location near Coit Tower, walking distance to Fishetmans wharf, North Beach and Chinatown. Helpful staff and nice happy hour. Had an early flight so we missed breakfast. Rooms were very clean and well equipped but small. We had a first floor room with en suite bathroom. The bathroom was clean but tiny and afforded little privacy. Room was fine for one night but would be tight for an extended stay.

My husband and I just spent 4 nights at the Washington Square Inn. We were absolutely thrilled with the location, on the beautiful square and in a lively neighborhood. I have stayed Downtown previously in SF and really don't like it. The Inn is charming and everyone on the staff is very friendly and helpful. We got the last room available which was Room 6, which is one of their smallest rooms, I believe, It truly was tiny and ideally we would have preferred another room, but in fact we don't spend much time there so it isn't as important to us. We liked their system of ordering breakfast the night before - it's a light breakfast but that's what we prefer since we tend to indulge throughout the day. (If a bigger breakfast is desired, there seemed to be a daily line forming across the street for Mama's.)
The staff was very helpful in providing directions via bus and in commandeering taxis for us when needed.
For those who prefer a small, personal inn over big downtown hotels, you can't do better than this.

Great location, and a very nice service-minded staff. The breakfast was delicious and so was the afternoon wine and cheese. They also had parking 1 block away. I really recommend this place for couples travelling to San Francisco!

This hotel is in a wonderful location. Walking distance to Fishermans Wharf and the Coit Tower. Staff are excellent. They cannot do enough and with complimentary wine and hors douvres each afternoon the hotel is a very pleasant place to stay. Rooms can be a little small but the hotel is a classic old fashioned inn. The area is very safe with lots of restaurants and bars and we would highly recommend

Stayed in the vacation rental for four nights - it's a really great place. Wonderful views and very roomy and well equipped. Only one complaint: the king bed in the master bedroom was quite comfortable but the sofa bed needed the extra foam mattress we found in the closet. With that it was fine, but it was a bit of a chore to set up. The day bed with trundle was not usable as the mattress was just terrible. We didn't need it, but if you do plan on using it be sure and ask the staff for extra padding. The staff at the inn were so nice and helpful. Really friendly. We will definitely return!
