“Quaint and very good staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2014

Stayed here for 4 nights in May. Staff were very helpful and pleasant. Rooms are comfortable and very quaint. Sherry and biscuits are a nice touch in the afternoon. Tea and coffee available at all times although not in the rooms. Breakfast was good. Bit out of city bit on a good bus route so easy to access everywhere. Staff were very pleasant and helpful from suggesting restaurants to taking the right bus! We left an item when we left and they were most helpful in returning it to us in the U K after. Def. recommend. Charming!!

This is a ordinary and unfriendly hotel with antiques and a good story.

When you enter the reception you see two beautiful rooms filled with paintings, books, old furniture and two fireplaces (gas). It looks expensive and is expensive. The hotel has a good marketing story about ghosts: "The haunted house".
The rooms are ordinary, but spotless and clean.
If you want to eat healthy, the breakfast is nothing. Mostly sweet cakes. But you can get hard boiled eggs, coffee and some fruit.

When you come to San Francisco, you come to one of the most beautiful cities in the world. You like to get advice and suggestions. And here we are with the problems of this hotel:
They have a culture where the people working in the reception, are unfriendly. They never say good morning, they do not like to help you, they do not seem to like questions, and they do not look at you when talking. They can call for a taxi, but if you would like to wait for the taxi on the streets, they threaten to cancel the reservation, because they think you will let them down and take another taxi.
So when you are being met with this approach, you do not bother to talk to them anymore or to ask them questions. But since I am a journalist with good research ability, this is not a big problem.
But it is sad for the hotel, because they do not deserve guests in the long run, if they do not improve.

Please accept our sincere apologies if you caught one of our staff having a 'bad day'. Very uncharacteristic of us. We try to have our guests be comfortable in the Parlor until cabs arrive so that we may invite folks out in the order service was requested. Please know that you are welcome to wait anywhere you would like for a taxi. Experiences have occurred where one guest jumps into a cab belonging to someone who was waiting a longer time. We need to find the most polite way possible to control this kind of situation.

My wife and I stayed here during our trip to San Francisco and we really enjoyed our stay. The front desk was always helpful, the concierge desk was full of good information and the breakfast was very good. Our room was eclectic and helped make the trip a great experience. My wife and I are experienced metro users and had an unlimited 5 day pass, but unfortunately the metro workers went on strike the week we were there. The hotel had a car that was able to take us down to the wharf area where we picked up other transportation or just hoofed it. That was another big plus in my eyes. I would absolutely stay there again. Thank you for your part in making our anniversary memorable.

Room Tip: While there is an elevator, I enjoyed staying on the second floor so we could take the stairs. It w...

Interesting, quaint, small boutique hotel. Large rooms, but a bit musty. Very friendly staff and free breakfast in the morning. Nice fireplace in the lobby. Interesting elevator ride (creaks!)...overall, quaint and lovely.

Thank You Rick. Glad you enjoyed our Parlor and large guest room sizes. Please let our front desk know if something is 'a bit musty' so we can check it out. There are many thing we can do plus large windows in the rooms for good ventilation.

Very nice hotel with good accommodations. Staff was very pleasant and morning breakfast and afternoon tea very enjoyable.

The hotel was decorated with antiques and dated furniture which was quite lovely.

Would recommend to anyone staying in San Francisco.

Beautiful old hotel with nice big rooms, and friendly people. Perfect for those who like their hotels to be a bit more interesting. Hotel is on a good location too, especially if you like Japanese food, since Japantown is just a block or two away.

Although the public parking lot was not guarded or locked, we parked the motorcycle covered for three nights and had no issues. We had a large room with two beds, a closet, dresser, and fireplace. The large windows opened for fresh air. The concierge saved me $42 on transportation to the airport by explaining which bus to take to get to the train that would take me to the airport!

Thank You Michele! We hope you and your motorcycle will come back to visit us one day. It must be quite a thrill to ride across the Golden Gate Bridge up into Marin or down the coast via Monterrey and Carmel to BigSur, or even Hearst's Castle. If one has a flight going out in the morning we also have a complimentary local car service that will deliver you to the nearest BART station. Please stay safe on the road and enjoy your summer!!
