“Reasonably priced Nice Boutique Hotel in San Francisco”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

We recently stayed at the Queen Anne Hotel. The hotel was built in the 1800's and has some beautiful period pieces and characteristics to show for it. the Hotel seemed quite nice but could use a bit of updating. The staff were all wonderful and helpful, always with a smile and always available if you need them. As they advertise themselves as a "bed and breakfast" hotel, I expected a nice breakfast, but continental style was all you get, which was a bit disappointing as I've had some wonderful breakfasts at other b&b's that I've had the pleasure of staying at. I will mention that the decaf coffee is perhaps the best coffee I've had! amazing for decaf. The rooms are spacious and quite quiet being in a large city. Parking is available for guests which is a HUGE plus in a city like San Francisco where parking is at a premium.

Room Tip: We had a corner room which was quite spacious

Given the mixed ratings we had a bit of trepidation. All dispelled quickly upon arrival. The place is indeed old and the furnishings show some wear, but we loved the atmosphere and has all the amenities we needed. They were able to check us in early, but we would have been happy to have dropped our luggage. We appreciated the friendly and efficient staff and the ever-present coffee and tea. We missed the evening set-up due to our dinner and an impromptu tour of the nearby Japantown. We also appreciated that there was a staff member at a desk just inside the door when we came in at 10pm - a quantum of security. Our room was huge and very comfortable - we think that the bed was king-sized. Soft top with good support. Good pillows, too. The street noise was modest, even by our quiet suburban standards, but we always travel with the white noise generator on the iPhone to attenuate the odd poorly-muffled vehicle. The morning breakfast was typical american-style continental - lots of hot and cold starch and a little warm sausage. Not much fruit. No surprises with bill. We would definitely recommend to those who are not high-maintenance types.

I am reading all these reviews and beginning to think there is something wrong with my wife and me. The only one that rings any bells is the guy who went there to investigate paranormal activity. We were spooked from the minute the cab dropped us outside and we, with some difficulty, spied an establishment through the scaffolding. OK, that is an unfair criticism as there is nothing wrong with upgrading a property.

However, we were given no help with our luggage (voluminous, as we were on an extensive trip) and also had to manage it up to our rooms. One guy only was on duty (it was late) and there was no-one else to be seen. The decor was "Hammer House of Horrors" , 19th century at best and gone to seed. There was an overwhelming atmosphere of doom about the place. The lift was scary ... slow to start, wobbly and noisy, and, thank god, we got there. The room, accessed by the compulsory creaking door, was depressing. OK ..... 4 poster bed and quite ornate old fashioned furniture, but, again, gone to seed and gloomy to excess. We sat there for 15 minutes trying to persuade each other that it was OK but when my wife suggested that we take watches while the other slept, we decided not to stay.

I have never before graded a hotel at 1 star and, when I look at the other reviews, I am inclined to ask the question "is it me?". However, that is my honest opinion .... an excessively old-fashioned, seedy and spooky place which gave me none of the comfort, cosiness and enjoyment I'm entitled to expect for the money and considering that we, from Scotland, are unlikely to be in the stunningly beautiful city of San Francisco again.

This is rather harsh. Arriving around midnight or later, it true as a small hotel, there won't be as much help with baggage but we do have a cart. Or if you called ahead to let us know, we could arrange to have an extra person stay late and help you. Our architectural style and period pieces really make this Victorian Hotel a unique San Francisco experience. Granted, shiny new antiques are difficult to find! The important part is the beds are new, the bathrooms are modern, and the staff really do care about YOU.

Our Internet search for lodging in San Francisco brought us to the Queen Anne because it was well located in an interesting neighborhood, it offered a complimentary breakfast, it has free wifi, a concierge service, and limited limousine service. The fact that it is a Victorian structure that survived the 1906 earthquake and fire, and that they serve tea, Sherry, and cookies at 4pm. everyday, made it even more intriguing. Upon arrival we were greeted by Laura, who proved to be most helpful during our stay, and she even personally presented us with a 40th wedding anniversary present. The staff was most accommodating and friendly. We enjoyed the fact that there were interesting restaurants and public transportation within easy walking distance. The Victorian furniture on every floor was delightful, and they were enhanced by the addition of beautiful Christmas decorations throughout. Except for our first and last days, when we had luggage to deal with, we enjoyed walking up the stairs to our quiet third floor room so we could look at all the fun furniture. The elevator was fun too, as it had it's own chandelier and an upholstered bench. The complimentary breakfasts included fresh fruit and waffles, and provided a perfect way to get started each day. If we should ever have another opportunity to visit San Francisco, we will choose the Queen Anne as our place to stay.

Room Tip: A room that faces Octavia will be a little more quiet.

Just returned after one week holiday in pretty SF. I will have fond memories of this city especially of this hotel. I went back in time. Although they could work on improving some things they are minor. I have never seen so many Xmas decorations in one place. I loved it. This Victoria hotel had such a calming effect on us when returning after a full day of sightseeing, we would return to the hotel and sit in the foyer with drinks and a good book (great music in the background).

We did have a hard time with the cold throughout the hotel. Every room, except for our bedrooms, were very cold, no heating? Wi-Fi was often off but everything else was very nice. I would definitely return.

We found this hotel on the web , and it was one of the only places with rooms available during the SF Marathon. Needing a getaway we booked a room for one night. A whopping $255! Room was dark and musty, with an overly cherubic decor including cheap stencils and decals placed randomly. the bed was comfortable, but the bedding was ugly red and gold Grandmotherly damask. Uncomfortable, but cutesy "antiques" filled the room. The bathroom was complete with mold and mildew on the ceiling over the tub area, and the floor was rather dirty. The proprietor was curt and unfriendly, and lectured me about not having a high enough daily limit on my debit card. I had used my card when I arrived in the City, and upon arrival at the hotel, she swiped the card and found it eceeded my daily limit. When I asked why she was charging me upon arrival rather than upon departure, she become haughty and began, instead, a diatribe on one needing a highly daily debit amount. Following her lecture, she never spoke wot us again. The location of the hotel is excellent for those who are able to walk, and we loved it. We asked a staffer about where to eat, and received vague, unusable info. on local restaurants. Rather than trust this dubious advice, we struck out on foot, and found a winner, The Elite on Filmore. I later found that the room prices had been inflated due to the Marathon, so THAT disappointed me. Oh well, "supply and demand." This is a well located place, but dreary and old. The "continenetal breakfast" was made up of foods probably bought at Costco, and was poorly presented in a depressing, velvet draped dining room. YUCK! Next time, I'll plan farther ahead and get something better. This place did not impress us at all.

We have been going here several times a year for 10 years now. Love it. Centrally located in SF, though not near main attractions except Japantown. But near in SF is relative. SF is very small as cities go, and from here you can get nearly anywhere in SF in 15 minutes. Rooms are nicely decorated in Victorian style, very comfortable and nearly all are spacious. Price is reasonable for SF (if you are visiting the UCSF med center, tell the hotel and you will get the med center discount). Best of all, parking is inexpensive by SF standards, about $17/night where as most hotels in SF charge 35-60 per night. Factor that into the cost. Breakfast is plain but free--cereals hot and cold, boiled eggs and sausage, lots of pastries and breads, make your own waffles, juices. We occasionally try other places, and always end up coming back here for a good combination of comfort and value.

Room Tip: We prefer rooms on the east side--no view, a bit darker, but extremely quiet. Rooms on west and sout...
