“Friendly, Fun and Great Advise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2008

My girlfriend and I stayed here and happened to stay in a number of rooms because we were coming back to the San Francisco over a weekend so our visit was broken up.
The owner Jan and David, a member of the staff, were so hospitable and gave us great advise on what to do and where to go in the short time we stayed there.
The Inn is very well decorated and well kept. It's clean and warm, much better than staying in a sterile hotel as the decor is different in each room. Having water and soft drinks to hand is very helpful too - these are the things can be lifesavers after a long trip. The really great thing is that are complimentary.
One aspect we really enjoyed was the communal table at breakfast. We had some fantastic conversations with the other visitors and really enjoyed the company of others. Be warned though, if you don't enjoy meeting people you may not enjoy this. The breakfasts were really good. Home cooked pancakes and muffins anyone? Yes please.
The location is great for popping into the cool areas of town such as Castro and Mission. It's also pretty close to the parks if you don't mind walking. You are only a short hop on the Pubic Transport to Union Square an main retail streets. Great place, great people.

  • Liked — The Staff and owners were great.
  • Disliked — The stairs to the entrance - that's all.

My partner and I had a very disappointing experience at this B&B.
We faced the following problems:
1. The advertised prices on their web site are very misleading – and despite bringing this to their attention, they remain on the website.
2. Breakfast is served around one table with other guests. This is ok if you don't mind, but I think that you should be informed about being expected to eat with another 10 people prior your booking. There is no privacy at breakfast.
3. Never book rooms that have no photo on the website as there is a reason for this! The yellow room is incredibly dark, small and claustrophobic. The so-called 'Hideaway' doesn't even have a window!!
4. We were overcharged by over $500. The Innkeeper apparently did not realise that we had paid a large deposit prior our arrival. He also charged us a random price that did not even fit the bill. However, when we raised this issue, the innkeeper took 3 days to sort this out and was incredibly rude and hostile towards us, never apologising and implying that it was our fault for not realising. He stayed this way with us for the rest of our stay.
5. If you are booking for more than three days, expect to be served the same breakfast every day. Some days we were not even offered a proper hot breakfast.
6. After spending $1880 at the Inn on Castro, the Innkeeper did not even bother to say goodbye to us.
7. This was not a personal clash; we noticed that Innkeeper David is incredibly rude to other people too.

i couldn't have asked for better accomodations! The property was very cozy and homey. Typical San Francisco house on a hilled street. Smack in the middle of the Castro neighborhood, so very GLBT friendly with lots of gay businesses and people all around you. But not just for gay people; lots of straight people here too! Close to the Haight also.
The staff was very friendly and would always sit down with us at breakfast and talk. Every morning they served an AWESOME breakfast, which was different each day. As for the rooms themselves...... CUTE! Being and B&B, they have about 8 rooms in the main house. Each room has a very different decor, excellent design. Each room also has its own name..... request the "Hideaway!!!

We stayed at their apartment - 88 Caselli- and it was, overall, very good accommodations. Very spacious, and well-stocked. Also very clean and quiet. I would definitely stay here again as it is only a short walk to castro.

The only drawbacks are that it was poorly lit, and the wireless connection did not work! And there wasn't a phonebook in the room, so it was very difficult for us to get information about the city and where we wanted to go. Also, the bed was hard, and the slip covers kept slipping off the pillows. But really, it was a nice place to stay and well taken care of.

The location of this B&B could not be better, ideally placed for the Castro . David and Jan made us feel very welcome, even though we arrived late. Our room had superb views over the Castro and up tp the hills above, and the bed was extremely comfortable (the White Room). Breakfasts were very good too, and all very good value for money. The next time we come to San Francisco (which I hope is soon) we will definitely stay here again.

I stayed at one the Inn's self-catered apartments at 88 Caselli. We initially had a bit of a problem with double booking, but they were extremely apologetic and enabled an alternate arrangement for our first night. Once we got there, though, i was pretty impressed. For the price of decent HoJo or Holiday Inn (+/-$150) we had a whole apartment in a great neighborhood. The kitchen was fully stocked with equipment and has a water filter. My only complaints would be that it's a little dark and the pillows are slippery. It's not romantic in a frilly Victorian way, but it certainly worked for what brought to it! A grocery store was a block away and Castro street was a 10 minute walk.

we arrived after a long drive thru, what felt like, half of the US and were greeted warmly by Jan.
He, David and Andrew made us feel like part of the family rather than like guests. Our room was comfy and sharing a bath was no problem at all (at least not for us). The castro itself was a great place to stay (for not-gay people and I guess for gay it is as great as it was for us) and Jan and David gave us a lot of great tips on where to dine or what to do/what to see!
Breakfast was yummy! Freshly baked muffins, eggs, fruit, real müsli. We nearly skipped lunch (or just had a bagel or so...).

After reading the previous reviews we brought earplugs since the house is older and so the rooms facing the street are a bit louder but there are also earplugs available at the inn. If you need more silence I guess getting a room facing the backyard would be sensible
