I thought this hotel was completely overrated and uncomfortable at best. I've visited SF many times and I usually stay at Hotel Monaco, right across the street from the Clift. Unfortunately for me this time around they did not have an availability so I decided to give the Clift a try. I only stayed a couple of nights but I couldn't wait to get out of there. The room is so sparce and minimalist in design that it was uncomfortable. I couldn't figure out how to operate the lights, the walls seem paper thin because I could here any movement or talk happening in the hallway and an ear-piercing alarm went off in the middle of the night and wasn't turned off for 30 minutes at least. But let's get back to the furnishing; I truly was not impressed. It didn't even look good. Plastic cubes that looked like they came right out of Ikea served as nightstands. While I appreciated the spacious bathroom, the rack to hold items was a mile away from the sink, and with only 1 floor mat on a very large marble floor, I literally had to slide the mat everytime I stepped so I didn't have to step on the icy cold tile. The the hotel upholds it's swanky reputation with the lounge but I was so turned off and uncomfortable there that I tried to spend every moment posbbile away from it. Everytime I stepped outside I looked at the Hotel Monaco longingly. My recommendation: stay at the Hotel Monaco for a truly comfortable and relaxing time and perhaps visit the Clift for a night at the lounge for drinks.
