“Great Location, Helpful Staff, Charming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

I was in San Francisco for a convention and stayed at the Hotel Rex. I've stayed in this hotel twice before and always end up coming back when I am in SF. The location is really convenient to BART/MUNI, Union Square, Convention Center, shopping, etc. Unlike the formulaic major chain hotels, the Rex has old world charm and friendliness. Other hotels are frenetic and businesslike. The folks at the Rex are professional yet friendly and the atmosphere is calm. The rooms might be a little dated, but the general literary theme of the hotel makes up for that. Jeff at the front desk is very friendly and helpful. Thanks for another great stay, Hotel Rex!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is not on the front/street side.

My hubs and I stayed at Hotel Rex for a business mixed with pleasure trip. We always go for the boutique hotels as we prefer character and charm to modern boring. We could not have asked for a better location. Jeff greeted us enthusiastically when we arrived. We were early but he promised to call as soon as our room was ready. So off we went to explore. Walking distance to Chinatown, Little Italy, cable cars, Union Square......the list is extensive. Around 3 we headed back to the hotel since we had not heard from Jeff. Our room still was not ready but Jeff was extremely apologetic and sent someone up immediately to ck on the housekeeping staff. He also gave us coupons for free breakfast. ( which by the way is a delicious buffet for $15.00 /pp.) So that was a nice gesture. Our room was ready shortly thereafter so we headed up. Other reviewers complained of the elevator but I thought it was not as bad as everyone said. It was small but worked well. Our room (504) was a King at the back of the hotel. Very nicely decorated, clean, bed comfy, pillows comfy, AC (window unit) worked very well. Bathroom clean with a window that opens which is nice to let the steam out. We had plenty of room for all our things. Really weren't in our room very much at all with everything just a stone's throw away. You can ride the cable cars straight down to Fisherman's Wharf. Two restaurants that we can recommend are The Crab House at Fisherman's Wharf and The Burger Bar inside Macy's in Union Square. The views from the latter are amazing, huge beer selection, and delicious food. The Crab House is casual, has a great vibe, right on Pier39. The crab is grilled and comes out on a huge iron platter. My hubs and I fought over the last piece :) For the price and the location you can't beat Hotel Rex.

Room Tip: Ask for the back of the hotel, much quieter.

The Rex has been a hostel since 1906 and is being maintained in a 1930-40s look which is extremely charming. Monday night is movies night, Tuesday is LP records, Friday is live music...and lots of repeat customers and local residents who use it more as a club than a bar. Great convivial experience. Great location to Union Square. and the room was large, well-maintained, with good cleanliness. I was there for a week and had a great experience.

Room Tip: rooms away from Sutter street will be quieter

I must say that I booked this hotel trough Booking.com and the price was about 40% cheaper than other hotels around so I am happy with this. However, after reading all the reviews I was expecting an amazing hotel and it is not, it is just another nice hotel.

Pros: Good location, but as good as another 100 hotels in the area; big room and big and comfortable bed; very good price

Cons: Not very clean, probably because its age, it was not a problem for me but it would not pass my mother´s exam...; very noisy ( room 214 facing sutter st. , you can hear traffic, music, voices..if you are a light sleeper look for another place ), they charged me for using the computers despite having said that the first twenty minutes were free; extorsionate prics for international phone calls.

At the end, I got what I paid for

I recently stayed at Hotel Rex for 6 nights and was extremely pleased. The staff were fantastic in every way. They even got up early (4:30am!) to put coffee and tea on for my partner who they knew was leaving to catch a flight. The free wi-fi was great and the mini fridge came in handy. I got immense joy out of the lobby pug, Maximo, and loved that they have free bikes for guests to use (though they were reserved when we got there). I would definitely recommend!

Nice hotel with personality and style. rooms are small but well equipped and comfortable. Surprisingly quiet given location and age of building. Staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. Complimentary coffee and newspapers in morning, happy hour at night in lounge. Staff will arrange for a very nice professional car service to pick you up and take you to airport, or anywhere else you want to go. convenient location with lots of nice restaurants, coffee shops, sandwich sotres and bakeries nearby.

We stayed here for four nights before heading for a wedding in the Napa Valley. The hotel was ideally situated, close to Union Square with all its fantastic shops, restaurants etc.

Our room was beautifully decorated and we had a large ensuite bathroom. We asked for a room at the back of the hotel as we had read reviews on trip advisor that those at the front could be noisy. As a result we did not have a nice view from the window but this was more than compensated by the comfortable bed and pillows and general ambience.

We were offered a free glass of wine in the bar each night between 5 and 6 pm which was a nice touch and also helped us to meet other guests. The bar, which was also the restaurant, had a lovely atmosphere and a real buzz about it. We ate there on 2 nights and although the menu was not large, we enjoyed the food on both evenings.

Staff were very friendly and helpful and we would certainly return there if we stayed in San Francisco again.

Room Tip: A room with a view of Union Square may be appealing but it was lovely and quiet at the rear of the h...
