“Great Location, Great Price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2012

We stayed here for 6 nights in May 2012, having never been to San Francisco before we had been looking to stay either Fisherman's Wharf or union Square, until a friend who lives in San Fran recommended the cow hollow motor inn. It was half the price of what we had been looking at and the reviews where much better.
We loved it, the location near the restaurants, shops and bars of Chestnut street was great, we ate in Tipsy Pig loved the sweet potato fries & pork sliders also there cocktails and pints of beers where great, lovely little outdoor patio area. Also ate in Ace Wasabi a sushi place literally across the road, great staff who suggested some lovely dishes and on Wednesday half price bottle of wine offer. We also ate in Pacific catch which was lovely fresh fish. California wine merchants was a great little wine bar. There's a Walgreen's around the corner if you have forgotten any essentials plus plenty of Atm's. We loved Mel's Diner over the road for breakfast this place is great, loved the French toast special it was delicious and reasonably priced.
You can get the bus for $2 number 30 which will take you to fisherman's wharf and you can get other buses really close by. The ticket is valid for about 3 hours and you can use any bus during this time, you can probably get 2 day tickets etc but we didn't look for it.
You could probably take a leisurely stroll to fisherman's wharf I'm not sure how long it would take maybe 30-40 minutes along the marina. You are only a few blocks from the seafront at the cow hollow.
Another plus about cow hollow is the free parking, the staff are really friendly and helpful they have a great free map of San Fran available at reception. The room was old fashioned in style it isn't the Ritz but it was a decent size plenty of space, very clean, coffee maker, iron & ironing board, hair-dryer & the bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was great too. Free WiFi to check out the local restaurants I couldn't fault the room. The only thing I can complain about is that we had a room right near the ice machine and it was so noisy even when people weren't using it, didn't stop us sleeping but it did get annoying and wake us up a few times especially when people were getting ice at silly hours like 4am or 6am.
I would definitely stay here again and would recommend to anyone who wants a fantastic base that isn't touristy, eat and drink with the locals and go visit the tourist stuff during the day with the local transport.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room away from Lombard street and any ice machines

Pros: free parking, free Wifi, close to shops, restaurants and bars on Chestnut St, the friendly receptionist who made sure we got a quiet room

Cons: Old furniture and decor, the fact that the rates almost double on weekends

All in all I would recommed this inn but make sure you don't get a room looking out onto Lombard St.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing Lombard St. Their website doesn't specifically tell you which ones the...

We have been going to San Francisco to visit our family for years, and just this past trip discovered Cow Hollow Inn. I cannot believe all the "toads" we stayed in until we disovered the "prince" of hotels! The location is absolutely the BEST! You walk right out the door onto Chestnut, and dozens of excellent restaurants, bars, shops, etc. It is near the Marina District, Palace of Fine Arts, and the Presidio. The hotel itself is completely comfortable. It is not "fancy" by Four Season standards, but clean as can be, well maintained, has a very nice, accomodating staff, and is reasonably priced. We will be staying at Cow Hollow Inn from now on! What a find!

The suites were the best. The beds were very comfortable. It was nice staying at a place where everybody was not tripping over each other. Our suite had a view of Chestnut Street, which is a very popular street. We could walk to eat or shop. It was nice to be able to cook our own breakfast and sit at a table and plan the day.

We stayed 5 nights in a room with a king-sized bed, and we payed a little extra for a mini-fridge so we could have cold beverages and some light snacks in our room. The hotel is on the elderly side but the carpets were clean and everything was in pretty good repair. No unpleasant odors. The TV was a small tube model, most places have upgraded to high-def flat panels by now. There was a desk with wireless internet and enough room for another table and/or chairs, would have been nice if they had furnished those. The internet was mostly functional but occasionally the signal faded and things would come to a halt for a few seconds.

There is a parking garage in the basement and there was no parking fee, we had rented a car for our stay so this was very good (though it required some careful maneuvering to get in a space). There are two elevators and unfortunately one was out of order and being repaired so it made for some lengthy waits at the other one and a long walk to our room.

Very good bus service is only a block away and we used that several times to get to places with limited parking such as the Fisherman's Wharf area and the boat to Alcatraz. A number of reasonably good restaurants are within easy walking distance. There is a supermarket maybe 10 blocks away. Lots of interesting sightseeing locations are not very distant such as the Presidio area and Golden Gate park. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Room Tip: Stay in a room that doesn't face Lombard Street, lots of traffic there.

We were looking for an inexpensive place to stay while in San Francisco for a few days. The rates were very reasonable, and the room was clean and very comfortable. It was located near public transportation. Parking is free and the people at the front desk were very helpful. The only bad thing was that the parking garage smelled like urine and there was a homeless man sleeping in the garage when we came in late at night. Our room faced Lombard street but the noise did not bother us. But we would stay there again.

The rooms are ok--- nothing special with 1970's decor. The suites, also with 1970 's decor, are very spacious, with a full kitchen, large livingroom with two sets of french doors and a fireplace ( call down to the front desk and they will bring you fire logs free of charge!), large bedrooms and bathrooms plus free nternet and parking. Great location in the non-touristy Marina District, with great restaurants, bars and shops surrounding the hotel. The rooms and suites will be renovated in 2013.

Room Tip: Don't stay in a room overlooking Lombard or Chestnut f you want quiet.
