“Staff has one answer to your every request: no”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2010

Can you turn off the heat?
Can you turn off the gas pilot in the gas wall water heater?
Can I have a receipt which shows the rate per day and the tax?
Whatever your request, the staff at Beck's has a simple answer: no.
Sometimes they are comical: If we turn off the gas pilot light, there will be a small amount of gas in the room giving the room a funny smell.
I can't argue with that.
But asking guests for full pre-payment at check in (with no itemization of the room rate), give me a break.

On the plus side: great location, close to historic F line street car, near Peets Coffee, etc.

Also, the rates are a bargain and free parking.

Very good location and very convenient to trams and buses, a few minutes walk to the main street of the Castro. Good secure parking and free. Room reasonably sized and adequate quality bed linen. Towels are getting worn but they are changed reqularly. Room was clean, bathroom showing signs of age but was clean and satisfactory. Although on Market Street traffic noise was not a problem. Reception staff very friendly and helpful, check in formalities were quickly completed. Answered emails quickly, politely and booking was worry free.

Television was somewhat old and limited channels but we were not there to watch television. If you want a hotel in which to spend a lot of time this is probably not for you but if you want somewhere secure, convenient location and reasonably priced then this is worth considering.

We are returning in October for 5 more nights.

stayed in may 2011, t'was not cheap (125 $ a night) but it was memorial day w-e... Plus, we had a huge room, huge sink / luggage area. Was very cozy and quiet because we were in the back (rooms facing the street are probable very noisy). Well located, close to good shopping and eateries (go to Crepevine on Church for a great breakfast/ lunch/ diner etc) and buses and tram going to the wharfs. Plus they have a sundeck, nice plus. oh, and free wifi

I stayed at Becks this week and for the first time in my life I was a victim of nasty homophobic attacks by a motel employee. The night-time front desk/security guy came up to me and a friend and questioned us for no reason. We are both clean cut "normal" looking guys and he had no motive to do so, other than the fact we were holding hands (we also over heard him say anti-gay remarks in filipino dialect). The security guy then called the police on my friend who was talking on the phone outside my door as he was about to leave. The police came and I was able to clear everything up, but it was obvious the Becks employee had an agenda. I have contacted several sources in Castro and I am encouring a boycott of this motel till they fire that homophobic employee. PLEASE DO NOT STAY AT THAT MOTEL and send a message that we won't tolerate that behaviour!

I stayed here for several days, but was very disappointed. The price is high, but the whole building smelled like pee, and there was a cockroach in my room, and crumbs all over the carpet.

Here's all you need to know about Beck's. When my partner and I returned to our room around midnight on a Saturday, we found a homeless guy sleeping very happily on the stairs near our room. We called the front desk immediately; the attendant promised to take care of the situation, which we figured meant calling police.

Same homeless guy was still asleep in the same spot Sunday morning. The desk attendant on duty acted like we were inconveniencing her when we asked to get the guy removed. We started wondering what would have happened if said homeless guy decided he wanted a guest's wallet. Our safety was jeopardized, and so was the safety of every guest here.

You've been warned.

BML has two main assets: it’s in the middle of the Castro, and it has parking facilities. If on top of that you add affordable rates and a relatively active scene later at night on the balconies, you’ll understand why it’s reasonably popular. Granted, it borders on the sleazy (not too much though, and security is tight with access theoretically reserved to guests) and the room has a kind of 1970s movie feel to it, but, hey, that’s what the guests want, isn’t it? I wouldn’t recommend it for a honeymoon, but if you want to spend a few nights in the heart of the Castro and are not too uptight, it can be fun. There is a tiny "sun lounge area", if you are desperate to work on your tan overlooking the streetcar on Market Street! Come what may, good value.
