“Still trying to figure out why anyone would want to visit Fisherman's Wharf”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

Fisherman's Wharf is downright depressing. The area is dirty, tired and run down. The restaurants serve mediocre fare at outrageous prices. There are no stores, attractions or anything else of interest. If you want a wharf experience, go to Pier 39.

“LOTS”

This is a must visit place. There are lots of shops and interesing artistry. I am not a shopper and this was a great place to stroll, crowd watch and the different foods are facinating

“Interesting Place to visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

We visited Fishermans Wharf at New Year and apart from being very cold, found it bustling and interesting. From the sea lions, which were amusing to watch, to watching sourdough be made, the Wharf has a lot to offer. I can understand why some people say it's run down, but it's a Wharf for goodness sake - not a 5 star shopping centre. Looking for the best clam chowder was interesting and yes there are loads of tourist shops, but we were on holidays and found it all fun. Must go to Alcatraz - but perhaps not in winter. It was freezing beyond belief but considering I didn't want to go, found it educational. Go to the Wharf, you'll be sorry if you don't.

“Must see SFO wharf”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

I've been to Fisherman's Wharf several times. This is the first time in the winter and the weather was great. The sea lions were barking and the chowder flowing. This trip I got a bowl at Tarentino's. Having seen the wharf many years ago, I still haven't gotten used to the carnival atmosphere that's developed recently. I always have to stroll by Aliotto's - as seen in "The Streets of San Francisco" opening credits.

“Disneyfied Brighton Pier with added shops”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

An odd place - lots of small seafood cafes with Italian names, all touting like mad for custom, and rows of small touristy shops, but only three kinds of stock; camera stuff and tat, T-shirts and tat, amazingly naff 'luxury decor items' and Lladro and very expensive tat, repeated again and again along the street. There's a LOT of eateries, and boats of all sizes and kinds, and ferries, and the famous trams that whizz along the reclaimed seafront. It's currently undergoing a major tart-up for the Americas Cup this year (2013) so there's roadworks and stuff everywhere, but we enjoyed wandering along, noting the rather good buskers, avoiding the unwashed beggars (there aren't many), and generally learning the history of the place. Pier 39 is the Disney section - relentlessly 'cute' enclave of eateries and shops, some quite upmarket, most of them decidedly not, but all aimed squarely at extracting the maximum from all visitors. The aquarium is well worth a visit, and the sealions are FREE to watch and rather entertaining. We found during the day the area is very busy, but at night it can feel a little daunting to solo travellers.
