After travelling around San Francisco for a couple of days using the famous cable cars my wife and I saw an advertisement for the museum. To my surprise the building houses the power plant necessary to drive the cables round the city. Although the environment is somewhat noisy, using drawings, photographs and sectioned mechanical parts, it does show precisely how the system was developed and how it runs today. The staff were knowledgable, an one could easily spend an hour seeing all that is on offer. There was no charge for entry to the museum.
