Located in tourist-saturated North Beach. Start at the visitor center across the street from the Hyde Street Pier. The staff will answer questions, and the exhibits showing maritime history of San Francisco are free and fascinating if you (and older children) are interested either in history, or boats, or both. At the pier there are several historical ships, with guided tours available on specific dates, and a sailing adventure several times a month for a fee. Check the website nps.gov/safr for details. Your National Parks pass gets you the tours, but not the sailing adventure, for free. Tours $5, kids under 15 free.
