“Wonderfully done, excellent staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

Excellent permanent and changing exhibits. You can count on the quality, relevance, and experience. I loved the drawings on Hindu deities, 2 recent China exhibits, including Shanghai, and more.

Need a break after you see more of interest than you realized? Try the potstickers at the cafe downstairs.

“Asian Art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

Outstanding collections and ever-changing exhibits. Right now covering all Asian countries-- India, China, Afghanistan, Japan, etc. Good, well selected examples but small groups of bronzes, ceramics, and many stone carvings-- Islamic, Buddhist, lots of Hindu art. You will see more Shivas than anywhere outside of Cambodia.

“Don't Miss”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

This is an absolutely marvellous museum whose collection is truly pan-Asian. It was wonderful to be able to compare the different Buddha figures from the subcontinent, southeast Asia as well as China and Japan. We have travelled extensively in Asia and this was our first chance to see them all together.

“Asian Art for Asian Art Lovers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

I have been to this museum many times--it is a "must" each time I visit San Francisco for the past 30 years. If you are interested in art from China, Japan, Korea, and the subcontinent (India, Pakistan, etc.), this museum has exhibits not duplicated even in New York City (where I do a lot of museum visiting since I live near NY.)

The exhibits are extensive and extremely well displayed. The cafe and gift shops are well stocked if you wish to pick out gifts/mementos or have a pleasant meal.

I would give Asian Art five stars, but for--the disgraceful mess San Francisco continues to tolerate in the form of numerous derelicts around the Civic Center area where the museum is located. Beware you will pass through nasty sights and smells before you enter the museum, because the city has avoided dealing with the many "street people" who use public places as bedroom, living room, and toilet. Sad and incomprehensible--New York dealt with this problem decades ago.
