I just visited the Rock and it was surprisingly great. My opinion is based on a early trip back 7 years ago. They have made significant improvements to the tour. The audio tour use to be an extra cost, presently it is included in the price of admission. I have been to other attractions in different parts of the word in which you have to buy the audio tour or guide and withing 20 minutes or less you are just bored or cannot understand how to electronic gadget, they do not compare to the audio tour at Alcatraz. One the main reasons the audio tour makes it so interesting it tells you step by step where to go as you tour the main jail where inmates use to spend most of time during the day night. Everything has been label with artifacts, pictures and props to accentuate the accuracy of events. As you walk through the galleries at Alcatraz the narrator utilizes voices and recordings of different inmates and correctional officers who used to work at Alcatraz who are describing in detail events that occurred while they were stationed at Alcatraz. If this was not enough the sound effects of explosions, people screaming and yelling at each other brings Alcatraz alive. The total experience makes you feel like you are there watching all of theses major events unfold right there in front of your eyes.
They also have a theater where you can watch an informational m ovie, about 20 minutes, describing the history of Alcatraz. Throughout the day they have a park and recreation officer give a recount of one of most famous escapes from Alcatraz. Three inmates who built a raft using raincoats. To this day they have not been found, and these officer will give you the evidence and investigation results from the FBI and th U.S. Marshall Office.
I arrived with my spouse, daughter, and grandchild around 11 in the morning and left around 4 in the afternoon. It was a great experience that everyone should explore.
