“Upscale Delicious Farm to Table Experience in Rustic Setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

Be sure to reserve a table in advance to insure a fabulous dining experience - this local and tourist favorite is not a "walk-in" establishment. I've enjoyed the bistro's creative farm-to-table menu for two summers now and confess to having fantasies about their hand-made pan seared gnocchi with fresh peas, mushrooms and onions in a bed of lemon-thyme cream sauce. We always share a plate of gnocchi as an appetizer even though it is considered an entree. The sea food is a must to experience. Like everything on their menu, all fish/crustaceans are creatively prepared (tuna, halibut, lobster) with beautiful accompaniments such as tomato risotto and mashed artichoke and potato. In total, I've dined here five times because of the cozy rustic ambience, friendly and knowledgeable staff and above all, a stellar menu and consistently beautifully prepared food showcasing high quality locally sourced ingredients. Portions are just right and service is impeccable at every turn. Diners appear in jeans to dinner jackets and the Bistro greets everyone with the same hospitality - very refreshing especially as this is obviously a fine dining experience. The deserts are phenomenal (out-of-this world panna cotta) and the coffee is fantastic (even decaf). Bring a sweater as it tends to be drafty. If you want to enjoy a more "private" romantic evening, be sure to request one of their cozy corners as tables are very close together. Town Hill Bistro is off-the beaten tourist path and that is one of its many charms that make this establishment a gem. I feel it's rare to find an establishment that offers upscale farm to table dining with flair, passion, impeccable service and genuine hospitality at "affordable prices" (soups, salads and small plates $7-$12 and large plates $17-$20). If you want to immediately feel "at home" and enjoy the best that Mount Desert has to offer, you will LOVE The Town Hill Bistro.

“Hidden treasure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

If you like unique, fresh food this is the place for you. Away from the beaten path this place was recommended by the inn staff where we stayed. All of the entrees are made from locally grown produce and freshly caught seafood.

“A Diamond in the rough”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2012

We drove by it twice and missed it totally as it has an abandoned look. The inside reinforced our initial evaluation. The food though totally knocked our socks off. The pan seared gnocchi was outstanding as was the cous cous with shrimp and lobster. It is way off the beaten path so you shouldn't see many tourists.

“Very good,but...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

We are in the area for the week and came here on a local recommendation. The food was quite good, but we were put off by our server. When we were placing our order, one of us inquired about what was included with the entree and the server quickly replied that a starch and a vegetable were included. When asked what those might be, the server looked at her like she had three heads and said (with attitude) "It's the chef's choice.". After she left with our orders, we all agreed that the question was legitimate....what if you had a food allergy or did not like the chef's choice? and that it set a bad tone for the rest of the meal. Fortunately, the meal and drinks were very good. Two of us tried the much praised "Mo tini" and we were not disappointed. It was delicious. We all enjoyed our entrees, with the lobster and shrimp with couscous voted the overall favorite. We all agreed that we would recommend this place to others, but hope that the wait staff takes note and treats their customers with a bit more respect.
