Usually we just use a room wherever we vacation to sleep, shower and change clothes. We don't really care about the ambiance or decorations, etc. We do expect cleanliness, comfortability, peace and quiet so we can sleep at night, and service if we are in need of something. So our expectations are not that great. But, we were very disappointed with this stay. The only part they provided was the peace and quiet. When we first arrived there was no one anywhere to greet us or at least provide some information on our room. We found our key hanging inside the main area next to the front door in an envelope with our name on it where everyone would have access to. The thing that really bothered us was when we pulled the bed covers down when we were about to retire for the night. THERE WERE NUMEROUS LONG BROWN HAIRS ON THE SHEETS !!!!!!!!! Not one or two, but maybe 15 - 20 !! We were so disgusted I went to the office ?? / desk just inside the front door of the main area but there was no one to be found. There was a set of sheets in the closet so we changed the sheets ourselves. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE !!! Obviously the sheets were never changed from the last visitor. We laughed about the snow shovel leaning against the outside of the building right out side our door. It didn't take too long to realize what the shovel was for. Right in the walkway there was a pile of dog do do that I had to clean up so that we didn't step in it. We didn't know how the A/C worked and we didn't have a thermostat in our rooms but in the middle of the night we woke up sweating because the A/C was turned off. If somebody would have notified us that it would be turned off at some time during the night we could have opened our windows. When we did open windows some windows had screens and some didn't. The wall switch for the light in the bedroom was on the far wall opposite the bedroom door so you had to walk thru the bedroom in the dark to turn the light on. We did find the housekeeper later and inquired about an extra key (there were four in our party) and she advised us to just hide the key outside somewhere.
So much for the bed and breakfast too. We were told that the breakfast was not included in our stay. I would advise the owner (whom ever that may be because we never did see them) to place their Bed and Breakfast under a different category. Do they have a sub category under Bed and Breakfast named "Dirty Bed and no Breakfast" ?
I also had to fool with the back compressor area of the refrigerator to get it to be quiet so we could sleep.
We enjoyed visiting Bar Harbor very much but the accommodations provided by Chiltern Inn were lower than the one star!!
