“An idlyllic cabin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2014

This was our first time in Bar Harbor and we wanted to stay somewhere quiet and on the water and this fit the bill perfectly. We stayed in cabin #5. The cabins sit on a small cove with beautiful views and easy access to the water for tidepooling or kayaking. The property was quiet and peaceful. The cabin was well appointed with a queen bed, full bath, couch, easy chair, and a kitchenette with a table and 2 chairs. The kitchenette is big enough to heat up food and cook simple meals but if you were doing serious cooking 3 meals a day I think it would be a challenge. We also had a patio with seating that looked out onto the water.

The one negative is that even Maine can get hot and humid, and with neither air conditioning or a ceiling fan, the cabin could get hot during the day. During the hottest days of our trip, it was not possible to cool the room down to a comfortable temperature even with all the windows open and running the small tabletop fan that was provided. If you are very sensitive to sleeping in warm temperatures, you should keep this in mind.

The cabin is located well off the main road, approx. 6 minutes from the entrance to Acadia park and 15 minutes from Bar Harbor. It is a good compromise if you want to enjoy the restaurants and activities of Bar Harbor but want a refuge from the crowds and the noise. The owner is very helpful if you need tourist advice or anything else.

If we ever go back to Maine we would stay here again without hesitation.

Bonus tip: Mind the tide charts and try to go out at low tide after dark. If you touch the seaweed, it glows! Bring a flashlight as the beach in the dark is treacherous.

We are just back home - in France - after our third stay at Edgewater. Once again, we had a real great time. Everything is just perfect there: the amazing view, the quietness, the quality and cleanliness of the cottage, the convenience of the access to Acadia National Park and last but not least the kindness and advises of the owners, Jayne and David! We already miss our breakfast on the terrace, after a morning kayak tour in the bay.
We'll definitely be back! Sylvie and Fred

My husband and I spent 4 nights at the Edgewater Motel & Cottages and had a wonderful experience. We stayed in one of the motel rooms, which we both agreed were extremely clean and spacious. If we were to make the (long) trek back to Maine someday, we would definitely return here, but might try to stay in a cottage for even more privacy. The views from the deck off of the motel rooms (and all cottages) are absolutely stunning. The beds were very comfortable with quality linens. Bathrooms are newly updated, some of the furniture in the room is not, but you're not really looking for anything fancy. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful in making restaurant recommendations (among our local favorites was the Travelin Lobster--lobster delivered to your door! and 2 Cats for breakfast). The location is off of the main, busy road but close enough to downtown Bar Harbor and other destinations on the island. We definitely would recommend this place!

I guess the most telling thing I can say about the Edgewater is that we have been coming here for two amazing weeks every summer, for twenty years. Another reviewer said it best - it's a "home away from home." We tried other motels near Acadia National Park after we stopped camping, but once we found the Edgewater we were completely hooked.

It's on a beautiful, quiet cove minutes away from the Park and downtown Bar Harbor. You can't believe you're that close to town, it's so peaceful on the cove. We often find it hard to tear ourselves away from the cabin porch to do anything but watch the tides, the lobster boats, and the wildlife. From that porch we've seen harbor seals and porpoises, herons, cormorants, loons, eagles and hummingbirds. Low tide lets you wade out to discover sea stars. The water is Maine cold and the bottom rocky (bring water shoes) but I'll swim there on a hot day.

Now regarding the basics: This is a great value. We've stayed in both the motel suites and the cabins and found all have their charms. David mentioned that he had just renovated the motel suites last winter. Everything, everywhere, is clean and neat as a pin. David and Jayne are always friendly and helpful; they clearly take a lot of pride in this place and it shows. The grounds and flower beds are well-kept and lovely. The whole staff is great. We have never had a problem or request that wasn't addressed immediately. WiFi worked well for us. We rarely eat out any more, preferring to fix meals in the cabin and enjoy the incomparable view of the cove. The Bowdens get a lot of return visitors and everyone seems to know that you keep the noise down to savor the quiet, the sounds of water and gulls and loons.

This is a special place. Our thanks to the Bowdens for sharing it with us all these years.

Just returned from our annual trip to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. The cottage we stay in is a home away from home. We are able to cook a great meal in the fully supplied kitchen. The beautiful views of Frenchman's Bay provide a reason to spend time at the cottage and watch the tide come in and go out. It is a great value for the location. The owners take pride in keeping the cottage spotless and making annual improvements to keep us coming back. We would highly recommend the Edgewater to family and friends.

There were 6 in our party staying in two of the motel rooms. It is an older property, but our room, which included a kitchenette, was spotlessly clean and near the water which was important to us. At low tide it was fun to search for shells. It was very quiet--not on a busy highway. It was close to an entrance to Acadia National Park and to Bar Harbor. David was helpful in telling us about restaurants we might try and places to visit that we wouldn't have found on our own. We followed his suggestions and found them to be just as he described.

We just returned from spending a week at Edgewater Motel and Cottages. We were in a cottage and we had everything we needed. The cottage had a full bath, immaculate. The kitchenette had a 2 burner electric stove top and plant of pots and pans , dishes, which all seemed new. They supply dish detergent and dish towels and provide housekeeping services as well. They are very
eco-conscious and thus do not supply paper towels or napkins so bring those with you if you want them. The kitchen had silver ware, cork screw, toaster, full sized coffee maker. Coffee is not supplied but it is available in the office beginning at 8AM. Excellent coffee. There was a large, but not full sized refrigerator and Microwave.

We had a large bedroom area with a king sized bed that was very comfortable..and I am picky about mattresses! A large closet with plenty of shelving in the bedroom area for storage. The living was a comfortable size and had 1 recliner, a large easy chair and a full sized sofa. There was a flat screen tv which we never used because nothing could compare to the view outdoors!

The kitchen area had a table with 4 chairs. All in all the living space was more than adequate for 2 people. We also had a large deck with 4 chairs and a large wooden table. The deck has nice filtered shade until about 3:30 then it had full sun. The only thing missing was an umbrella for the table when eating dinner on the deck. It was very sunny. I think next time we will bring one.
There were picnic tables and charcoal grills. Supply your own charcoal or ask in the office if anyone left charcoal behind.

There are several cottages. most have a parking space next to the cottage. The only cottages that do not have a designated space right with the cottage are cottages 9,10 and 11. Although it was a short walk when unloading and loading the car, it was not a factor because these 3 cottages are a bit isolated from the others and thus there was more privacy. The other cottages are adorable and each have a view of the water.

And the water...ohhh the water. The bay was calm and peaceful all the time. Perfect for kayaking. You can launch your kayaks right from the beach and explore the bay for miles in either direction. This is not ocean kayaking with big waves or swells. this is a calm, protected salt water bay that leads out to Frenchman Bay. Great for beginners as well. You can arrange with the owner to have kayaks rented and delivered. Our neighbors did this and they had the kayaks for a 24 hour period of time. There are caves to explore when kayaking..very cool. There are lobster pots scattered about the bay and the lobstermen would come by to collect or check their pots.

The grounds were gorgeous, meticulous landscaping, lush green grass and lots of perennials . A hummingbird visited me on the deck while having breakfast. While we were there we saw bald eagles , an eagle's nest with a fledgling (you have to be on the water to see it), a seal and a school of porpoises.

The feeling of relaxation is just amazing while here. The silence was deafening in a good way. There is no playground or swimming pool. I read reviews about the MDI biological labs causing a noisy environment but we hear nothing.

Meals: we did cook several meals. After all, why pay the big bucks at a restaurant when you can have your own private water view with your meals? We did try the Traveling Lobsterman once. We had 2 lobsters, 2 ears of corn and a large order of mussels. this meal was delivered fully cooked and it cost $31.50. We also tried Mainely BBQ which had good pulled pork and in a very rustic environment . Utter Heaven swerved up great ice cream for a treat. We ate one morning at Jeannies Maine Breakfast in Bar Harbor after watching the sunrise atop Cadillac Mountain. The breakfast was just ok and I would not go back there. I will review the restaurants separately. There are a few more that we did eat at. Mainely Delights in Bass Harbor is a cute off the beaten path seafood stop. BYOB. Worth the trip. Excellent food and service.

Be sure to bring bikes and ride or hike along the carriage roads in Acadia. See Eagle lake, Jordan Pond, Sand beach, Otter Cliffs and of course, popovers at Jordan Pond house! If you are 62, get yourself a National parks pass for $10. Good for life and totally worth it!

I highly, highly recommend Edgewater for its charm, peacefulness and helpful advice from Jayne and David, great hosts. Next time we will stay for 2 weeks!

Room Tip: Cottages 9,10 and 11 have a bit more privacy but you park your car a little further away.
