My husband and I stayed three nights at the Bass Cottage Inn and loved it. While the Inn is located in Bar Harbor, it's off the main road on a small side street. The location turned out to be perfect - we had quiet surroundings, yet could walk two blocks to restaurants and less than four blocks to catch the buses to Acadia.
You enter the Inn through a glassed-in porch. To the left is a small sitting area and to the right is the dining room. Beyond are several different living areas and a library, then a small place with guest refreshments (including great cookies and treats, daily!). While we were there in August and spent more time outside, I would imagine that in fall and winter the living rooms would be really cozy.
We were welcomed by Jeff and taken upstairs to our room, number six on the second floor. It was quite spacious, about 13 feet wide and 15 feet long, with a bed and nightstands, a little (original to the house) sink area, and tall windows. Although it is said to have a partial ocean view, you'd need to look through the trees to see it - but we did not find that to be a big deal. The bathroom had a large tub and smallish shower. It was beautifully decorated and very comfortable with areas to put our clothes away and lots of surfaces to set things on. I see that some earlier reviewers had problems with noise from the a/c, but this did not bother us. I really liked this particular room, but all of the rooms were very nice.
I think that the thing that set the Inn apart for us was the friendliness of the owners. I mentioned to Terri that we wanted to have a smaller dinner, just some wine and cheese. She suggested a store down the block with some great cheeses. When I returned with them and asked for a plate, she said she'd make up a tray for us and said to let her know when we were ready. We came downstairs to find a beautifully arranged platter with fruit, crackers and cheese, wine glasses and a bottle of wine.
That level of hospitality is what sets the Bass Cottage Inn apart. It's a beautiful place, a great location, and truly kind innkeepers. If we return to Bar Harbor, we would definitely stay there.
