“Quaint, Quiet & Good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2014

I live in BH during the summers - I discovered this little place off of upper Cottage Street, across from Hannafords two summers ago. Unlike a lot of touristy places in BH this one aims to please and the focus is on quality and good service. Their chef has been there for years, the wait staff hustles to meet your every need - they see the details as important as the big picture - and the owner makes himself available to help out where and when he's needed. He introduces himself and checks on each table along the way. By the end of the night you all feel like old friends. Do yourself a favor, make a reservation in their sweet little dining room but stop by the bar first. Then tell them you saw this on trip advisor. You'll make their day!!

“Great little place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2014

We happened upon this restaurant by accident. Stopped in for a drink. Waitress was wonderful. We went back for breakfast a few days later. Great meal. Tom was wonderful. Very friendly. Only negative at all is the tea cups are the same cups they use for coffee and that makes the tea taste like coffee. Not a big deal to most people.

“Beautiful Interior”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2014

We had dinner at the Friars' Pub earlier in the week. Overall, I'd say our dining experience was so-so. My wife had halibut encrusted in baked mashed potatoes. She said the halibut tasted like it had been frozen, then thawed, more than once. I had cioppino, which was a little heavy on the tomato sauce. The unique flavors of the various shell fish were masked by the tomato taste. The crostini was very hard and seemed like it had been baked several days earlier. We shared a decadent chocolate dessert, which was quite good. The service was prompt, friendly, and attentive. The interior of the old Inn is beautiful, with wonderful carved woodwork everywhere. This is not a horrible place, but I have to say that the food was not up to top-of-the-line restaurants in Bar Harbor (of which there are many).

“Dinner was GREAT but breakfast was AMAZING”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2014

We stayed at the Black Friar for 4 nights. We ate dinner there on the first night an the food was delicious. Great attention to the details and superb service! The breakfasts were incredible! Everything we ordered was done to perfection. You don't have to stay here to get the breakfasts! And what a great value! We would recommend it HIGHLY for anyone staying in the Bar Harbor area.......breakfast or dinner.

“Great Pub, Delicious Food & Live Music”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2014

The Black Friar is a bit off the beaten path in Bar Harbor. It's across from the Hannaford's Supermarket tucked in the corner of the municipal building parking lot. What a great, unique pub and restaurant. The pub is very much like a traditional British or Irish pub, very small, intimate and cozy. Super friendly service with really good cocktails. The big surprise was the food. I had the haddock, which was perfectly prepared and beautifully laid out on the plate. The other dishes coming out of the kitchen looked equally delicious. I happened to be there on a live music night which only made a great evening even better. If you are in Bar Harbor, it's well worth it to check The Friar out. With so many cookie cutter type restaurants in Bar Harbor, this was a great surprise.
