Acadia is one of the great treasures of the national park service. Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Point, Cadillac Mountain, and Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse are all beautiful destinations where granite formations, forests of pine and birch, and the Atlantic Ocean are part of the scenes. Roads and parking lots are well maintained and easy to navigate. We did not take advantage of the free Park service bus tours as I wanted to be able to stop when desired to take photos and climb to good vantage points for the pix. September was a great time to visit with fewer crowds. Tree color has yet to begin changing by mid-September. Plan to spend a full day to get around to the separate sections of the park spread across Mount Desert Island.
