“Not a normal Marriott”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2012

The lobby and staff are great. They updated the lobby but forgot about the rooms. Furniture, carpet, and bathrooms are circa 1980's. Heavy mold and mildew in shower. Wallpaper peeling off the wall and paint blistering from the moisture. All these conditions lead to a musty, moldy feeling. The carpet is moist and the staff was kind enough to bring up a fan to assist in removing the wetness feeling from the room. I realize it is a beach front hotel, but the sliding glass doors need updating to assist in reducing the moisture in the rooms. Don't bring a black light, you'll never stay. The dry sauna will give you splinters, it needs a complete restoration.
Staff was very pleasant and the location is fair. I have stayed at Marriott's for years and this is the worst one yet.
Wait for a complete renovation before considering staying here, or just lower your standards to a basic Hotel 6 that cost a fortune.

“Good facility and location...Great hospitality!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

The staff went out of their way to ensure my satisfaction. Great service in the executive lounge. The hotel is in a good location by the beach not far from shopping and the airport. The central location makes it easy to get anywhere on island for scuba, golf, a boonie stomp (hiking) or to the military bases.

“Yuck”

Marriottt would be mad to attach his name to this tin down unfriendly unprofessional hotel. In disrepair unfriendly wait staff felt like 3rd world hotel. We renamed it the moldy marriott. Location was amazing. Good was poor. Fitness center run down.

“Average, at best”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2012

Old and worn. The rooms are just ok, aged furniture, bedding, and the bathroom probably hasn't been redone in over 10 years. The gym equipment is terrible, should have been replaced 20 years ago. Old, moldy smell also -- as reported in other reviews. 3 stars, at best . . . . maybe worse.

“Tough Call”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

OK, I've been to Guam many times, having stayed in several of the local hotels. My first choice would be the Sheraton, but that was sold out on my last trip. My company booked me at the Marriott. I was skeptical, but a coworker said it was OK.
If I'd been traveling for vacation, I probably would have never checked into the Marriott. The parking garage was difficult to navigate, in poor repair and dangerous. Imagine high speed traffic on blind corners that are also pedestrian walkways. I felt like my trip from the car to the elevator I was literally risking my life. Only, when I got to the elevator I discovered that it was out of order. So I risked my life to get to a broken elevator. Great. Not a good start.
The layout of the property is bizarre. Once you get to the lobby level near the parking garage, you are nowhere near the lobby. You are also nowhere near the (other) set of elevators to get you to your room. If you forget something in the car, it's going to be a long and dangerous journey from your room back to the car.
Internet is slow (like, dial-up) and expensive. At one point, I was told that Internet access is free for loyalty card holders. But after I signed up for the loyalty card, I was later informed that Internet is NOT free for loyalty card holders...just wireless Internet is free. (???)
The guests at this hotel seemed to be an odd mix of 50% soldiers in (battle fatigue) uniform and some kind of convention. This made riding the elevators (the working ones) a bit of a chore. Imagine riding up 10 floors to get to your room, when the elevator is stopping at (literally) every floor. Lots of people going up or down ONE floor to visit other guests. Oh, and I have nothing but respect for our soldiers in uniform. It's kind of odd to stay in a motel filled with them, though. I was on a business trip, but even so the atmosphere didn't "feel" like a hotel. More like a barracks.
The room was in poor condition (carpet needed to be replaced, sink cracked, overall decor was extremely dated, TWIN size beds that were uncomfortable...)
I think if this Marriott was located somewhere like Boston (for example) it would be sold and/or closed within 6 months.
I'll give it 2 "dots" rating just because it is easy to find worse hotels in the Guam area (unfortunately). For most areas, this Marriott wouldn't deserve a single "dot" rating. For Guam, it's not terrible.
If you are going to Guam, book the Sheraton, the Westin or the Hilton. I'm also told the Outrigger is nice.

Room Tip: My tip would be to book the Sheraton, if you want a "good" room
