“"Zen"sational!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2013

Here we are awaiting our departure from Honolulu. We regret having to leave, but before I go, I just have to share the following! My husband and I just spent five glorious nights here! This was our first visit to Hawaii. After spending five days in Waikiki, we looked forward to the quiet simplicity of Waimanalo. From the moment Herlinda greeted us at the gate, we knew our stay at Hale Nalo in the Zen treehouse would be all we hoped it would be! As other reviews have mentioned, it was pure bliss waking up to the sounds of the ocean and the melodious birds outside of our windows. We found the Zen to be exactly what we wanted - perfectly appointed, spotless, and spacious. With palms and guava trees off one lanai, and the mountains off the other, we felt as though we were truly in our very own treehouse - isolated from the world! We applaud Herlinda's approach to keep Hale Nalo as a quiet retreat. In talking to other guests we met during our stay, we all agreed that her emphasis on trying to keep Hale Nalo as tranquil and as low traffic as possible, creates the atmosphere we were all looking for! I cannot speak for the other rooms, but the kitchen facilities in the treehouse were ideal for self-catering many of our own meals. This made our get away even more low key to where we didn't have to leave our "nest" for a full day or two. The beach is a mere hundred yards away so the surf lulled us to sleep each night....
What makes this all work so perfectly well is Herlinda's warm and hospitable personality! Her attention to detail left us wanting for nothing! We cannot wait for our next visit to Hale Nalo and to see Herlinda!

My husband and I loved staying here! It was the perfect antidote to Waikiki! Our room was more spacious and airy feeling than expected, impeccably clean and just steps from a beautiful beach. We could hear the surf at night and birdsong by day and loved looking out onto the sweet gardens. Herlinda is a great host and her recommendations (especially breakfast!!) were spot on. This part of oahu's windward coast has a great vibe and we thoroughly enjoyed our entire stay! Mahalo!

My husband had business that took him to Honolulu. We are a couple who hates crowds, love to visit the quiet areas of any vacation spot we go, and live and eat with the locals. We love to stay away from the hubbub. The plan was for my husband to make the trip and I would join him for a portion of it. We had rented VRBO in the past and looked to do so again. We came across what appeared to be too good to be true: The Zen Treehouse. Although a bit concerned about the drive from the Zen to Honolulu on a daily basis for my husband's work, we felt it was worth it. And it most certainly was. The drive actually ended being less than a typical daily drive from our home just outside Tampa into downtown Tampa. It took only 20-30 minutes of easy driving to cross the mountain on Pali Highway into downtown Honolulu..

The Zen is located within a very quiet neighborhood, only a few minutes’ walk from the beach. The kitchen, living area and bedroom of the Zen are all open to each other. High, wood-beamed ceilings and wood floors thoughtout. Windows on all four sides. Through these windows drifts the constant lullaby of the ocean, breezes and birds. There is plenty of space for relaxing in the living area. There is a flat screen television on the wall and a DVD player with a small but really good library of movies. The kitchen is well equipped and separates itself from the living area by a dine-at bar. There is a bowl of fresh fruit to greet you upon your arrival. Two balconies. One off the kitchen that has a grill. The other off the living area. The enclosed bath is perfect and has a wonderful open shower with rainfall shower head. The bedroom has a screened partition that separates this room from the living area. The king size bed is heaven. Not too soft and not hard at all. My husband is awful with beds. He complains about his back constantly and he has to have just the right bed to rest. Usually very, very firm. He was amazed that during his 11 night stay, he never had a back ache and just loved the bed. The bedding was wonderful. All keeping you in that feeling of Zen. The first night I was there, I laid in bed and thought, wow... no air conditioning, no stale air being moved around by ceiling fans, this is real fresh air sweeping across me! And the sounds of nature to soothe.

Herlinda is a wonderful hostess. She lives on the property and is always just a phone call away. Yes, there are house rules, but we wouldn’t want it any other way. It’s these rules that make this property desirable for folks like us. Herlinda will provide you with recommendations of places to dine and the best places to visit. And for those who are taking a romantic vacation, Herlinda performs weddings! After 32 years of marriage, my husband surprised me with a wedding ceremony in the rear gardens of the property, with Herlinda delivering our vow renewals. Perfect!

Hale Nalo is best described as adjacent rooms attached to the owner's house and should not be mistaken for a hotel or cabin rental. We had been looking forward to a pleasant stay as a result of the numerous positive reviews on this site as well as the Hale Nalo website itself, but left with mixed thoughts. Advantages and disadvantages are summarized below.
Advantages:
1. The owner was very responsive in terms of offering a discount as we stayed a total of 8 nights.
2. The grounds are well maintained and offer a nice and quite oasis.
3. The house is very close to Bellows beach which is beautiful.
Disadvantages:
1. The walls are extremely thin (to the point that we could hear our neighbor's cell phone vibrate). Our stay was accompanied by a symphony of snoring and other noises from the other 2 rooms that was quite uncomfortable at times.
2. In an effort to create a "quiet" environment for her guests, the owner has created an environment which is very strict to the extent that she requests guests to disable the car lock sound, and NO guests (reminded of this in person twice and via e-mail after my very quiet visiting family stopped by very briefly to see the room). One feels as though they are "tip-toeing" on the property in an effort not to offend the owner which was very uncomfortable.
3. The kitchen space provided is quite small, and the only available option for cooking is a microwave and toaster.
4. The rooms are clean upon arrival, but there is no cleaning service during the rental period.

My family has lived in Waimanalo or been vacationing there for 4 generations. This was a new rental for us and was fine in terms of offering a roof over our heads and having a nice garden to breakfast in but this is not a place that I would recommend to anyone seeking to kick back and relax.

Our property is geared to mature travelers wanting a quiet place to relax in a peaceful, private, and secure setting. To this end, guests have exclusive use of the property. We state this very clearly on our website and in our rental agreement, to assure a well-informed decision is made: either the exclusive privacy appeals, or the traveler will keep looking for a rental which allows gatherings and entertaining.

Upon arrival, this guest had so many visitors (including a toddler) that we thought somehow the exclusive use information had been overlooked, so we offered a discrete and apologetic reminder. It surprised us to learn this guest indeed was aware, but that she didn't accept it. She then ignored us by “tip-toeing” in yet more visitors which, we agree, created a very uncomfortable situation for everyone.

IOHO: Please, if you don't agree with a rentals’ policies, don’t book. HN

This review is long overdue, however, the experience is still pretty vivid in my mind. My husband to be and I stayed here for about a week back in 2011. Captain Howie married us down the street on the beach and what more of a convenient place to stay...... We didn't want to stay at a commercial resort and much preferred a home like setting and got exactly what we wanted. Herlinda was away the week we stayed, however, her house sitter was just as pleasant. He greeted us when we arrived and was very courteous and friendly other times we ran into him.

Not only is this location just a VERY short walk to the beach, it's quiet, peaceful, and beautiful. I couldn't have asked for a better place. Thanks for a great place to stay! We'll definately stay here when we return.

Our recent week in Hale Nalo set a new standard for Oahu accommodation and hospitality. Completely removed from mega-resort Hawaii, Waimanalo is a peaceful Hawaiian village on one of the most beautiful and quiet beaches anywhere in the world. We stayed in the Zen Treehouse, an airy, bright, clean apartment with views to both the spectacular Ko'olau mountain range and the Waimanalo beach community and the ocean 1/2 block and 50 yards of sand path away. Oahu is pretty small, so from Waimanalo we were able to get around to the places on our itinerary - Honolulu, North Shore, Kailua, Hanauma Bay - in less than thirty minutes. Herlinda is a friendly, experienced, and helpful hostess and gave us amazing tips on hiking, swimming with dolphins, farmer's markets, music and restaurants. We are already looking forward to our next stay!

Just finished a five night stay in the Zen Treehouse suite in Hale Nalo in Waimanalo which is on the windward side of Oahu, a 35 minute drive from Waikiki. Hale Nalo is located in a quiet (except for the sound of wavesand birds chirping)residential neighborhood one minute walk from a beautiful uncrowded two mile long beach that was recently recognized as the best summer beach in the U.S. The Zen Treehouse suite is on the upper floor of this three unit lodging with beautiful views of the nearby breathtakingly beautiful mountain range. The king size bed is very comfortable, the walk in closet roomy, the bathroom has ample counter space and a very large shower, the living area is comfortable and the kitchen quite large. The proprietor, Herlinda, has done an excellent job designing this suite. She is friendly and easily accessible as she lives in an attached house on the property.

There are two roadside restaurants in walking distance that despite their outward appearance offer good food for takeout- Sweet Home Waimanalo and Serg's Mexican Food. I would also highly recommend the Thursday night farmers market in Kailua for delicious fresh and reasonably priced meals. Be advised that there is not a lot of night life in this part of the island so if that is something you desire look elsewhere. However, if you want a great place to relax this is the place for you. Note that the beach can be quite windy in the winter but Hale Nalo itself is sheltered from the wind. It would have been nice if there were more comfortable lounge chairs for the lanais as well as a safe deposit box in the room. These minor quibbles aside if you are looking to get away from it all Hale Nalo is the place for you.
