What a dive, very disappointed! I would not recommend staying at the Hawaiian princess -do be mislead by the condo owners - they don't disclose what a horrible area it is located in. It's extremely dirty and the condo is right off the main road, in a locked compound. So much for paradise, wondering if you car is going to be there in the morning or the possibility of getting robbed. The property is run-down and not desirable. Landscaping doesn't exist and the pool - what a joke - it's so tiny. Oh and by the way, fine dining does not exist, and it's a 30 min. drive to casual dining. Caution...Forget stopping for gas, you might be mugged in the day light. It's a filthy place and not a place to spend a holiday - even if someone gave it to you for free - stay away!!!

I routinely use the Trip Advisor website to review potential vacation destinations. About a year ago I booked into the Hawaiian Princess via the link on the Trip Advisor site for [-] The condo was exceptional and far more than I had ever expected.

The kitchen was well stocked with all new cookware and utensils. The dinnerware was a complete matching service for 8. I found this refreshing as compared to other vacation rentals I have stayed in the past. From all appearances this unit has recently been completely remodeled. There are new TV/VCR & DVD in the living area and bedroom along with nice lanai furniture facing the beach where I enjoyed several sunsets and meals. On a previous stay I made a recommendation into the guestbook to add a reading lamp in the living room area and to my delight upon arrival this visit it was there.

This is the real Hawaii, quiet, relaxing, beautiful beach, great pool/hot tub and barbecue area where I did most of my cooking. I would highly recommend this place to anyone that wanted a quiet relaxing slow placed vacation. This is not Waikiki. Love it and plan to return again.

Just returned from 10 days at the Hawaiian Princess.Having read some of the reports of the Waianae area, I must say I was a little leary before we arrived. However my wife and 2 young kids and myself settled in and felt comfortable, safe and relaxed. The unit (1301) was beautiful and in great shape. The beach is very quiet and on most days was perfect for swimming and snorkeling, even for the kids. There is a beautiful reef with lots of fish and turtles. My kids played with many of the local kids who showed them true Aloha spirit and shared thier boogie boards with them. The views from our lanai were perfect especially at sunset. We awoke to roosters every morning at about 6:30 am (they did crow a lot!)
Not a lot of good restaurants in the area, (fast food) but we knew that. Bought groceries at Tamura market and Sac n Save. Locals were very friendly.
This is, however, a poorer area of Oahu. There were many tents lining the beaches to the south of us around Nanakuli and I'm not sure I would have felt safe leaving my vehicle parked near these areas. Our beach on the other hand was wonderfull. The parking lot is gated and guarded as are the property grounds.
Also enjoyed the drive to the north towards Yokohama point (very rugged!)
I would definitely stay at the Princess again.

I stayed at the Hawaiian Princess 14-24 October 2005. I was there alone for 5 nights, then my husband came for the last 5 nights. I booked a "premium" unit (#1308), corner unit, up high. Now, this unit may have been "premium" as compared to others in the building, but my description would be more like "standard". The building is old, but recently remodeled and very well cared for. The lobby area and pool are new and nice, but by no means deluxe. The unit I stayed in had not recently been remodeled and appeared to have been furnished from a consignment shop because the furnishings were old, dirty and out-of-style. The unit was moderatly clean, but had bugs in the kitchen. The air conditioner was also old and could not keep the unit cool during the day, although it was pleasant at night. There is NO WAY you can stay in this building and not need any A/C - the sun hit the lanai doors about 3pm and the temp rapidly rose, not cooling down until after sunset. The mattress was old and saggy and the sheets polyester. The towels were plentiful, but small, old and raggy, especially the "beach towels". The kitchen was well equipped with hand-me-down dishes, pans and plastic glasses. The master bath had been recently re-done (new shower, sink and tile) and was very nice, but the 2nd (1/2) bath had mylar wallpaper and a broken toilet. The condo was over-run with cheap, ugly beach-motif artwork and lots of kids' art. There was so much "decorative" junk sitting around, I had to put a lot of it in closets and drawers just so I could have some counter-space. The dining room table was broken and the fabric on the chairs dirty. There was a very nice, new TV in the living room with VCR and DVD player, but the one in the bedroom was about a 8" diagonal screen about 10 feet from the pillows on the bed and didn't work very well at all, even though there is cable.

The Princess is run by security guards 24 hours a day. They are very strict, and if you break any of the 1000 posted rules, you will definitely be called on it. I felt like a child in school! My first morning there, I woke up very early and went out to the pool. After settling in with my book, I was approached by a security guard and told to leave because the pool is not open until 9:00am, and the residents don't like the noise early. Hello, I was alone and it was 8:50am!!! Every day there was a group of homeowners at the pool, they would tell the guests (me) where they could sit and which chairs were "saved" for the homeowners (all the new, comfortable ones!) The beach is very nice, but in a small cove, so don't come thinking you are going to take long walks on the beach! There were Hawaiian local out on the beach, especially on the weekends. Otherwise, there were never more than a dozen people on the entire stretch of beach the rest of the week.

This area is probably the poorest part of Hawaii. There is VERY high security at the condo and signs everywhere telling you not to take valuables out on the beach. For security purposes, I would worry about renting a 1st floor unit because they have direct access to the beach from their lanais. I never could decide if this was a good thing or a bad thing. Also, you should be prepared for many homeless people around, especially at nearby state park beaches. They allow these homeless people to camp at the beaches, and the homeless have totally taken over the state beach parks. They have their tents set up at all the picnic tables and they have completely trashed the bathrooms. It is very depressing to see a beautiful beach completely ruined. This makes the Princess's beach look even better!

There are absolutely NO RESTAURANTS to eat lunch or dinner, except fast-food, without driving 25 minutes. I kid you not. The ones that are there are McDonalds (2), Pizza Hut (2), KFC, Subway and a couple more in that category. There are also NO BARS and NO NIGHTLIFE (without the 25 minute drive). I did find an EXCELLENT sushi place, Sun Sushi, which had a huge menu and was very reasonable, but you have to take it "to go". Otherwise you must drive to Ko-Olina or the town where Safeway is. There are 2 or 3 grocery stores in the area, but I recommend hitting Safeway on your way to the Princess from the airport, as it is 25-30 minutes away. The other grocery stores were OK, but mostly like a convenience store. Liquor stores are also few and far between. Again, hit Safeway on the way in, and don't expect to find any fine French wine or Champagne.

Anyway, this review my sound somewhat critical of the Princess and the Makaha area; but, if you can get past these problems, and you are able to entertain yourself, you are in for a real treat. The rates at the Princess are less than half of what you would expect to pay for a hotel...and you have a whole condo with a lovely lanai and spectacular view! It is well worth the money, especially now that you know what to expect. Bring lots of books, DVD's, etc, and get a corner unit if possible. I know a lot of the reviews say it's a great place for kids, but my 15 year-old would have been bored to tears and the condo would not be comfortable with more than 2 people anyway. So, leave the kids at home (unless you have an infant, or maybe a toddler...then you won't need any more entertainment!)

Have a wonderful trip to Hawaii, ALOHA!

my wife and i just returned from a stay in unit 605 (newly remodeled and a great space). first off, you must be ok with the fact that the hawaiian princess is located in one of the most non-touristy spots in oahu. if you're looking for lots of tourist activities and restaurants close by, this is not the place. however, if you want to be in a secluded part of the island and amongst the locals, there isn't a better place to stay.

the building itself is in decent condition for its age (this isn't the ritz), however the unit we stayed in was just redone and it's very pleasant and very clean - definitely recommended. the view from the room is outstanding and the waves crashing all night long makes for a very nice night of sleep.

the beach behind the hotel has excellent snorkeling (truly some of the best on the island) and was never too crowded (a light mix of locals and mainland owners of the units in the building). we really thought it was one of the most private as well as pretty beaches on the entire island.

if you don't want to drive at least 45 minutes (the traffic in and out of waianae is really bad - be prepared) to eat, then your best bet is buying food and cooking it yourself. the only good restaurant we ate at was a little sushi place in the mall ("hello sushi") which had the best deals we've found anywhere in the world (and the ahi was as fresh as you'll ever find... try the poke for about $6/lb). there's a carry-out window chinese place on the ocean side of the street just north of the mall next to another sushi place - avoid it at all costs (trust me - you don't want to get sick like i did).

when you do get outside of waianae and hit the tourist stuff, here's our list of faves:

- pearl harbor (spend a full day and be sure to tour the missouri and the sub)

- north shore (worth a day just checking out the beaches and being immersed in the surf culture)

- waikiki (this is definitely not our scene but worth at least a few hours to check out an amazing mega-resort area atmosphere)

- tantalus (wow! you'll say that at least 10 times on this drive that's well worth the time)

- island drive (i'd recommend spending 2 full days just driving the whole island and stopping at beaches along the way. we just found that stopping at places that weren't crowded and looked nice was the best way to pick and choose)
