“A great vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 29, 2008

We stayed at the Ko Olina from 2/16-2/23. It was our first visit to the Ko Olina as I am a new owner.

Check in was easy and without hassle. We arrived at approximately 2pm and although our room was not quite ready, the front desk was very accommodating while we waited. In fact, all of the staff was great.

6 of us stayed in a 2BR 2BA ocean view villa. The room interior was great and very clean. Having 2 adults on the pull out couch in the living room made privacy a slight issue but nothing that got in the way of a great vacation.

The grounds, pool area, and lagoons are wonderful. Even though it was Presidents' week, there was plenty of room and we didn't have any problems finding chairs.

You will need a car if you stay here--at a minimum to go to the grocery store. I would recommend taking as many snacks as you can from home. Going to the local grocery store saved us a lot of money but Hawaii food prices are still quite a bit higher than we have here in NY. The bell/valet staff were excellent. Some would say "they were just doing their job" but we felt they went above and beyond with their assistance and friendliness.

There are quite a few options for dining on-site. Kolohe's grill offered great food and live music until 9pm. The buffet on Fridays and Saturdays should not be missed. Prices were typical for a resort type setting. Chuck's Steakhouse, also immediately on site was anything but spectacular--average food , slow service for inflated prices.

If you are ok spending a little more for dinner, I highly recommend Azul at the nearby JW Ihalini. There is a lit sidewalk and it's a comfortable 10 minute walk. The food was amazing and the service was unbeatable.

There is very little to do in the evening or after dinner. As I mentioned, the live music ends at 9pm. We weren't looking for wild parties or anything like that and had no desire to venture out for the 30min drive to Waikiki but it was pretty quiet. There is a "game" room on the 3rd floor of our building but it was very uninviting. The pool table is old, the ping pong table was folded up and it's only open until 10pm.

In response to all of the reviews that discussed the on-going construction. It wasn't bad at all. Unless you were really listening for it, the noise blended in with the sound of the ocean, and the people at the lagoons/pools. There will be construction for quite a while with the plans for new buildings etc. Do not let this deter you from choosing the Ko Olina.

We will definitely return!

We stayed at the Ko Olina from 2/9 through 2/16. We had a great time. Exchanged through Interval to stay there. I'm a little confused reading the negative reviews. We found the room(s) spacious, clean, beautiful and we loved the sitting area off of the master bedroom. Who cares what the purpose is, it's great! I actually used it to read a little while my husband was still sleeping and the kids were sleeping in the living room (in-laws took the 2nd bedroom). I was able to close the doors to the sitting area shutting off the living room and the master and had the little room to myself to curl up on the huge seat and read in peace.

The resort was a good size. It was at 100% capacity, but it didn't feel like it. There was plenty of room at the pool and the beach. The beach is beautiful. The lagoons keep the waves away and it's easy for the kids to splash around without worrying.

As for restaurants, this is where I feel it lacks. There are only 2 on the grounds, unless you walk up the beach walk 1.5 miles to the hotel, they have 4 or 5. The 2 restaurants are Koelho's (good breakfast buffet), the Fri & Sat Prime Rib & Seafood buffet can't be missed...great crab legs and lots of other dishes to choose from. Chuck's Steak House is the other. This was just OK. Nothing to write home about. With the construction going, they will be adding more restaurants and some shopping.

The construction was not distracting at all to us during the day. You hear in the background some beeping and the hum of the machines, but there's no loud banging or anything like that. It pretty much becomes like white noise in the background.

This is a great resort definitely worth staying at. We had no problems at all and will hopefully be returning.

We stayed at the Ko Olina Beach Club 2/5-2/11 2008. For some reason we were upgraded to a penthouse room. It was beautiful - full kitchen, granite counter tops, plenty of room for lounging around. The resort is about 20 minutes from the airport, so we advise renting a car. Plus, Ko Olina is about 20-30 minutes from Waikiki, so if you have a desire to drive down there, a car is needed. Back to the resort - the 4 lagoons that are carved into the beaches are wonderful for snorkeling and were never crowded. You can freely use any of the 4 lagoons, although, the one to the East is a public lagoon, with a few more patrons. All of the restaurants at the hotel were delicious and you MUST have the seafood buffet (Fri / Sat nights) at Kolohe's, their beachfront restaurant. Overall, the service and quality at the resort was excellent. All of the employees are nice and very responsive to your needs, although, we had no issues that needed to be addressed. The gym was OK, lots of cardio equipment, with TVs but limited weights / machines. My only complaint was that there was no music playing, so it was kind of quiet / awkward in there. The Ko Olina was a great place to stay, we'd go back there in a minute.

I generally like Marriott hotels...but this one was really disappointing. The rooms are a nice size with all the comforts and amenities that the Marriott chain advertises, but it is run extremely poorly. I am staying here for a week and four days in, my key would not work 3 times. Every night I return to my room, I'd slide my key into the reader and rather than registering a green light and let me in, I would get a flashing red and yellow light. To make matters worse, there are two buildings to this property and it just so happens that the building I am staying in, is not the one with the front desk. They generally have a bellhop stationed at the door, but not always.

Also...the self-parking situation is a bit of a joke. It's fine during the weekdays, but on the weekends when the hotel fills up, the garage fills up quickly So the overflow parking tends to end up in the roundabout driveway or along the rim of driveway. I found myself parking along the driveway like everyone else on Thursday and Friday because the garage was full. When I returned tonight, I parked in the overflow area and was told by the bellhop minding the front that I had to find parking around the back. He had the nerve to make me move even though other people had parked in the general area where I was trying to park.

I am thoroughly disappointed with this hotel.

We traded in to this 'resort'...wouldn't go back.
Front desk staff was pleasant enough but had requested a high floor, ocean view room....got a 4th floor, children's play area/barbeque view. When we asked about an upgrade, didn't really receive an answer. Our room key repeatedly wouldn't open the self-park entrance gate, which was a minor inconvenience...the response to that was 'the card reader is probably dirty'.
Our 1 bedroom unit was large but not laid out very well, IMO. The bathroom (off the entry) had a sink, toilet & shower, in the next area was another sink & a bathtub with louvered doors in between the tub & the bedroom....not sure what the purpose of that was. Off the other side of the bedroom was a sitting room (?) with sliding doors to separate it from the bedroom...it had a loveseat & a small table...don't really know the purpose of this area.
The unit was in need of some good dusting & vacuuming (which I did mention to the Housekeeping Staff & never was done). Under one of the pedestals for the dining table was a kukui nut, which stayed there for the entire 5 days we were there. The dining table chairs (wood) had dried on food on the backs & around the seat cushions.
From the reviews of the steak house I read on here, we avoided that but did eat at the beach-side restaurant twice. The food there was okay & priced at typical Marriott/Hawaii prices.
The beaches & walkway to the JW were spotless & very nice...this was about the only positive we could find here.
This 'resort' felt more like a hotel with its' inside corridors & the decor in the rooms.

  • Liked — That we traded in to it through Interval International & only had to pay a small fee.
  • Disliked — Didn't feel like a beach resort.

Came here to a conference held at the Ihilani just down the road. I was told this place would be nice, and it was. Much more family friendly, nicer pool area, food more affordable than the Ihilani and the best part, a Starbucks, and the best little market in Ko'Olina. Things are still expensive, but in proportion to the over all quality and beauty. A very relaxing stay, getting up at 6am to get some great coffee and wonderful pastries, slowly enjoy that, then hit the spas at 7am, then maybe slip out for a full breakfast at Kolohe's Beach Bar & Grill, mostly all you can eat, but good and reasonably priced. It has a beautiful view of the beach which again is so relaxing. This is a nice place to eat all day, some evenings there is good free entertainment, Hawaiian stile, Hana HO! I loved the Prime rib, the Crab legs, the fresh shrimp, the great salads, and the desert corner. Mix that with a great Mai Tai and top that with a Starbucks coffee with desert, hmmmm what an evening. So come here for a classy room, relaxing atmosphere, and stay. Sure there are lots of things to do on Oahu! just ad time and stress to do it, come here when your ready to just relax, play some golf, and mind you this place has great golf, play some tennis, they have a Fitness room available next to pool area, with lots of equipment. I want to go back already.

We have just returned from 5 nights at the Ko Olina Beach Club on Oahu. Our overall experience was very positive and we would definitely consider staying there again. The weather was great. It’s a beautiful property with helpful and friendly staff. The location provides for a private and safe experience. We were originally booked into a ground floor ocean side room but when we asked they moved us to the 6th floor with a beautiful view of the pools and the ocean…very nice.
A few more comments: The rental rooms are a bit small but nicely appointed and very comfortable. There are limited restaurant choices on the property and what is available is of average quality with high prices. The location is remote which is probably good if you plan on spending most of you time on the grounds at the hotel. Parking is $20.00 a day, and you have no choice as there is nowhere else to park and you will need a car due its location. If you want to see Oahu including Honolulu, you are in for some driving. We were told ahead of time about the construction of an adjacent hotel. While efforts have been made to minimize the distraction, the backup beeper noise of heavy equipment is near constant during the day.
Even with a few negatives, this is an upscale property with beautiful grounds and lagoons, and it is Hawaii.
