My husband and I stayed at the JW Marriott Ihilani in early September, right after Labor Day weekend. We wanted to stay away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, and enjoy our short stay on Oahu. We had a very long day of travel, and upon arrival at the JW, we immediately felt relaxed. The staff at the front desk was welcoming and friendly, and made check-in a breeze. We were asked if we wanted to upgrade for a small fee per night and we said let's do it, and man, am I glad we made that choice! We were brought up to our room and opened the door to gorgeous accommodations. The room was spacious and modern looking, but still kept the island feel. We walk further into the room and notice our view, which is just breathtaking. We looked over the lagoons and out into the beautiful ocean. It was quite spectacular and a definite warm welcome to Hawaii. The room itself was large, and the bathroom was a great size, as well, more than enough room for the two of us and then some. The lanai was spacious and had a nice couch outside for us to relax and listen to the lapping waves. It was a great spot to enjoy a cocktail, listen to some music and enjoy our surroundings.
We went down to the pool area for some drinks and the pool service was great, quite attentive. The pool was surrounded mostly by adults, which was nice and quiet, and made for a relaxing afternoon. We grabbed a drink and an appetizer at the hotel bar at sunset, and what a perfect location. Our server was friendly and our drinks and appetizer were delicious. We did leave the hotel for dinner our first night, and realized what a mistake that was, but quickly learned our error and decided to stay at the hotel for dinner the second night.
On our second and last night at the JW, we went to the Japanese restaurant, Ushio-Tei for dinner. What a great find! We sat in the sushi bar and had a great meal. Our server was Heather, who was as nice as can be. She was attentive without being overbearing and very accommodating. Joel was the gentleman behind the sushi bar serving up fantastic, fresh fish. They helped make recommendations for me due to being pregnant and that was very much appreciated. My husband dined on various fish, all of which he said was fantastic. Joel hooked him up with a bit of sea urchin, which he loved. All in all, a great experience at this restaurant at the property!
One minor negative review is the restaurant, Azul, which is not owned by the property. We tried to go here first and were told we could eat dinner in the bar, which was completely ok with us. We sat at a table and kept waiting for someone to take at least a drink order. The hostess stopped by about 15 minutes into our waiting and told us the manager would be over shortly to help out since the restaurant was pretty busy. Instead, we watched the manager schmooze with a couple of chefs and their friends that were in town for the Hawaii Food and Wine festival, and still completely ignore us. We decided it was time to get up and go elsewhere, definitely glad we did.
Overall, the staff at the property was friendly and very helpful. We would call ahead to the valet to pick up our car and it was always waiting right out front for us. The property itself is beautiful and well maintained, and is a little slice of heaven on the island of Oahu. If you're looking to stay away from the madness of Waikiki, this is a great location to do so!
