4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

Really, this is just a lovely place. Stayed here after a few days at the Marriott in Waikiki (wife had a conference). Very quiet. We came in the off season (week before Thanskgiving) so there were not many guests and a small amount of minor construction (refurb of several outdoor areas). The Disney hotel Aulani is having some additions put on but it was far enough away not to bother. The Ihilani hotel is located on the western side of Oahu in a large gated PUD across from the Kapolei industrial district (maybe 3-4 miles away) to the east. The resort area consists of several hotels and wedding chapels on four lagoons with a golf course, marina, time shares, single family residences and condos.

Fair warning - I'm Marriott gold so YMMV with respect to accomodations.
Check in was very easy "Here's the car keys, bra'" and the room was exquisite. Sliding louvered panels over the glass dores so we could adjust to get just the right breeze. What a view (see pics). The Ihilani itself has a pool and is on the lagoon. The second lagoon over is relatively empty - no resort there yet. Wife saw a large turtle there on the last day. Did I mention the views? The lanai was heaven for morning coffee and evening wine. Staff was extremely helpful.

Did not get to try the Paradise Cove Luau next door (out the front on the left - easy walk) - maybe next time. Did eat at the main restaurant Naupaka Terrace for the Saturday buffett. Mahi cooked to order - I'm done. Ok - three times and I'm done.

Yeah - we'll be back.

Resort hints:

You need a car - car rentals are not that much. There's a taco restaurant just out of the resort but nothing else within walking distance. Otherwise, be prepared for some expensive food. It's good, but I personally can't take all the rich food 3x a day.

Car self parking was $25 a nite for me. Let the valet park your car the first nite and before 10 pm, go down and self park it (just get the keys from the valet, no need to move the car).
Snorkel gear from the Ihilani stand at the lagoon is free for guests - just ask.
Check the activities - wife went to the "feed the fish" thing and saw lot's of tropical fish and got advice on where to snorkel. Staff is just outstanding.
There are lagoons inside the hotel area with sharks and rays. Talk to the animal husbandry expert on site. She feeds them and cleans the lagoons and is quite knowledgable.

Mahalo,
J...

We took 18 hours flight from Thailand to here. We are here on business and pleasure trip for 7 night. The first night we order room service. The next morning the maid said she will take the food table away and left it for 3 days. We also woke up with the strong paining smell. The sound of construction going around us. We look out the balcony and see construction going around everywhere. We try to ignore and go about our business . Still at 4 pm the paint and drilling sound got even louder .My friend call the manager, she said she will call us back and never did. The second morning we work up at 9 am with even louder construction sound, heavier drilling, strong paining smell and worse.. shouting match of construction workers sitting and hanging themselves out from the balconies. Some are right under my room. hanging themselve out from balcony, yelling, fighting. etc. I call the front deck to report the even again. Nothing happen and the situation continue. We have to do a meeting call oversea for a fews hour right away. It was awful because both the construction workers and the construction keep getting louder and got into the phone call. The paining smell so bad that I have to take asthma medication and we both starting having headache. My friend call the manager again and the one that spoke with us the night before was not in. Finally another manager came along and try to move us to another room. But after we look around the room, there were construction still. The new manger admit that he has no clue of where the construction are going on. I can not believe this is JW Marriott standard nor how it handle customers in any situation!! They system has totally fell apart. So sad and upsetting.

Room Tip: Do not stay here. It is over price and they have no idea what they are doing at all.

We had the time of our lives at this fabulous resort. We made our reservations in December 2011 and went there the week of October 15, 2012. As it turned out, they decided to do some extensive updating of the resort. Luckily we were able to go ahead and stay. It was fabulous. The staff was so attentive. the restaurants were outstanding. It was a very nice, relaxing week for us. The rooms were elegant. What a fantastic view we had! We would see the oceans and the mountains. The sunsets were out of this world! I will never stay anywhere else when I visit Oahu again. JW Marriott Resorts are the ultimate!! I have never stayed in one I did not love. The Ihilani was at the top of the exceptional list. Everyone from the front desk to the bellhops were so friendly and helpful. They were some of the nicest people I have ever met. Always willing to give you guidance and advice on where to go and what to do. It didn't matter where I wanted to go, they provided exceptional directions and guidance. It was very peaceful and out of the hustle, bustle of Waikiki.

My husband and I stayed at the JW Marriott Ihilani in early September, right after Labor Day weekend. We wanted to stay away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, and enjoy our short stay on Oahu. We had a very long day of travel, and upon arrival at the JW, we immediately felt relaxed. The staff at the front desk was welcoming and friendly, and made check-in a breeze. We were asked if we wanted to upgrade for a small fee per night and we said let's do it, and man, am I glad we made that choice! We were brought up to our room and opened the door to gorgeous accommodations. The room was spacious and modern looking, but still kept the island feel. We walk further into the room and notice our view, which is just breathtaking. We looked over the lagoons and out into the beautiful ocean. It was quite spectacular and a definite warm welcome to Hawaii. The room itself was large, and the bathroom was a great size, as well, more than enough room for the two of us and then some. The lanai was spacious and had a nice couch outside for us to relax and listen to the lapping waves. It was a great spot to enjoy a cocktail, listen to some music and enjoy our surroundings.

We went down to the pool area for some drinks and the pool service was great, quite attentive. The pool was surrounded mostly by adults, which was nice and quiet, and made for a relaxing afternoon. We grabbed a drink and an appetizer at the hotel bar at sunset, and what a perfect location. Our server was friendly and our drinks and appetizer were delicious. We did leave the hotel for dinner our first night, and realized what a mistake that was, but quickly learned our error and decided to stay at the hotel for dinner the second night.

On our second and last night at the JW, we went to the Japanese restaurant, Ushio-Tei for dinner. What a great find! We sat in the sushi bar and had a great meal. Our server was Heather, who was as nice as can be. She was attentive without being overbearing and very accommodating. Joel was the gentleman behind the sushi bar serving up fantastic, fresh fish. They helped make recommendations for me due to being pregnant and that was very much appreciated. My husband dined on various fish, all of which he said was fantastic. Joel hooked him up with a bit of sea urchin, which he loved. All in all, a great experience at this restaurant at the property!

One minor negative review is the restaurant, Azul, which is not owned by the property. We tried to go here first and were told we could eat dinner in the bar, which was completely ok with us. We sat at a table and kept waiting for someone to take at least a drink order. The hostess stopped by about 15 minutes into our waiting and told us the manager would be over shortly to help out since the restaurant was pretty busy. Instead, we watched the manager schmooze with a couple of chefs and their friends that were in town for the Hawaii Food and Wine festival, and still completely ignore us. We decided it was time to get up and go elsewhere, definitely glad we did.

Overall, the staff at the property was friendly and very helpful. We would call ahead to the valet to pick up our car and it was always waiting right out front for us. The property itself is beautiful and well maintained, and is a little slice of heaven on the island of Oahu. If you're looking to stay away from the madness of Waikiki, this is a great location to do so!

PROS: Check in was easy and the front desk was very friendly and helpful. My ocean view room was absolutely beautiful. The bed was soft and fluffy with white linen. The bathroom was very elegant. The room was clean. The spa services were nice and relaxing. Sunset views were breathtaking. Can relax by the pool or at one of the beach lagoons.

CONS: Everything was EXPENSIVE!!! Parking was $35/day, even for guests, which I thought was way too much for paying guests to pay. Restaurants on property were average. Noise from the pool and from neighboring hotels were distracting.

Room Tip: Ask for a sunset view room. Probably less noise from pool and other hotels plus the sunsets are abso...

Thank you for your review. As our guest at the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa, we were happy to hear that you were able to quench your thirst for luxury. From luxurious spa treatments to unparalleled service, we are singularly focused on providing a truly indulgent and calming experience. The activities of the neighboring hotel are indeed vibrant, which is part of what keeps their guests within their footprint. Your room tip for others is correct; we do offer quieter rooms on the sunset view of the hotel that can be reserved upon request. The parking price is comparable to properties throughout the island and we feel we provide good value given the location and extensive facilities. We regret that this was not your impression and offer our sincerest apologies. We were delighted to hear that your overall experience was enjoyable and you were able to relax at both the pool and within the beach coves. We hope to see you in the future. Aloha and kindest regards.

We stayed here for 2 weeks and it was fabulous! The rooms were very elegant and upscale to some other hotels we have stayed at here in Oahu. For the price, I recommend the stay. Staff are very pleasant and helpful. You share a semi private beach cove with the Disney Hotel next door. This is a great place to bring families if you want peaceful and safe stay, no noise like in Waikiki! It is at least a 30 min drive to Waikiki if you are planning to visit that area. I personally would take JW Marriott over Waikiki for the safety ness, relaxation, and peacefulness.

Room Tip: Overlooking pool and beach

We stayed here in August with my mother in-law, daughter and 2 grand daughters. We had a wonderful time. We tried to stay at the Disney Resort but it was booked. I was so glad we stayed here instead of Disney resort. It was much quieter and less congested. Though they only have one pool, it was big enough that it never felt crowded. The rooms were beautifully decorated and their suites were very roomy and comfortable. The lanais were big and we ate most of our meals looking out into the ocean from our room. With small children and an older great grandmother, it was easier to do take out and room service. Absolutely will stay here again.

Room Tip: The only downfall was that there were not enough eating places nearby. There was a mexican restauran...
