“Sunny, Lovely resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2012

Just spent 4 nights here. The resort is on the west (sunny) side of the island and is quite lovely. We got a deluxe ocean view room and it was one of the best hotel rooms we've ever had--roomy, a great porch with comfy couch and two chairs and a table, incredible view, great bathroom with two sinks. We ate at every restaurant and found them delicious, especially Azul. The cove and walkway south are pretty. We chose this Marriott because we didn't want more time in a plane but wanted away from Waikiki after a 5-day conference there. For this, it was a perfect choice. Easy access to the rest of the island. Disney is next door--as in sharing the same half of the little cove, right next door--and they happen to be a touch of a noisy neighbor... lots of families, shows at night with music and lights. But everyone there is quiet after 8:30 so it's not a big deal. I can't say this is all my heart's desire when it comes to exclusive resorts, but it's very nice, refined and quite calming. Great people at the bars, and as said before, great food. We got a really good rate through AAA, so I consider it a good choice given everything we looked for on this trip.

Room Tip: North facing rooms see a more natural seashore but the birds are quite loud at sunset and sunrise. S...

The hotel is in a beautiful location, rooms are pleasantly decorated. Onsite restaurants have good menu selection, dining room service was prompt. Front desk was simply unresponsive to many requests and housekeeping was erratic at best. Inoperable coffee pot had to be replaced first night. we had to make multiple requests to get the minimum number of towels. Housekeeping failed to service our room on two of the six nights stay. There was no hotel guide or any information regarding hotel restaurants and services avaible. First call to the front desk resulted only in a poor photocopy of the room service menu, with handwritten corrections. I tried again to explain I wanted information about the hotel, not simply room service, but received the same photocopy. I asked at the front desk, and was told it was being upgraded but he would find something for me. Another photocopy was brought to my room. On the third day I stopped by the front desk and strongly suggested hat I was tired of wandering the hotel to discover what restaurants and menus were on site and what other services were available. A leatherbound three ring binder was left in the room, but many sections were empty. The service was simply not what I expect from JW Marriott hotels of this class.

Room Tip: Upgrade to an ocean view.

This hotel has an outstanding location and has recently gone through room renovations that move it into that first class property category. We had stayed there in years past but were always dissapointed in the rooms (even our upgraded rooms with private lanai and spa were depressing). However, all that has changed.

Upon this visit I was very surprised to see the changes and updates to the rooms. They were beautiful. Decorated in beige and royal blues. I can now highly reccommend this property. It is right next door to the new Disney Resort and visitors can stroll over there as well and enjoy some of the Disney restaurants such as AMA- AMA for a change of pace. But during the day enjoy the JW's incedible pool, great food and service (with fewer screaming kids).

Room Tip: the rooms with the private lanais and spa are a Hawaiian fantasy come true.

The ingredients are here for a very relaxing, restorative vacation. The location is well away from the buzz of Waikiki Beach, yet not isolated without the conveniences of an array of nearby places to visit. Treat yourself to a deluxe ocean view room and you will not be disappointed. During our stay, we never once heard noise from neighboring guests.

There are a handful of good choices on site from the pool bar to the Naupaka Terrace for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Azul has nice outdoor patio dining and a tranquil setting to enjoy very well prepared dishes. If you seek a wide variety of culinary choices, during an extended stay, you may decide to venture off the resort. We enjoyed Roy's down the road at the Golf Course. Very good choice for local seafood dishes.

The atmosphere of the resort was very relaxing, the staff were all wll trained and very friendly.

Room Tip: If your trip is a once in a "longtime" and you love ocean views... yes, go ahead and go th...

A group of us needed a place to stay, west of Honolulu, for several weeks, Not only was it one of the nicest hotels I've stayed in, but we got incredible help (under some unique circumstances) from Geri, the Director of Event Management. In addition, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the view is beautiful. Suggest grabbing a cup of coffee and sitting around while they feed the sharks and stingrays in the morning (right at the hotel!).

Room Tip: Obviously, the rooms with a water view are better, but all the rooms were great!

With the exception of paying over $30.00 per night for parking - this hotel is perfect. The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel is located next to Disney's Aulani and my 10 year old daughter said she would rather stay at JW than at Aulani (they share the same lagoon). My husband said this was better than ATLANTIS in the Bahamas.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2012

We stayed at the JW February of 2012.  This was our first trip to Oahu, and second to Hawaii. We traveled to Maui 10 years ago.
I was nervous that I wouldn't like Oahu, since people seem to encourage visiting the other islands over Oahu, but we were very pleasantly surprised with the beauty of Oahu.
The JW is about 45 minutes from Honululu. The traffic on Oahu is TERRIBLE. Without traffic, it is easily a  20 minute drive from the airport.
We toured Waikiki and Honululu and you all can keep that city, thankyouverymuch. If I wanted to see a big city I wouldn't travel all the way to Hawaii to visit one.
Anyway, Ko Olina is a very nice little 'neighborhood' . There are some residences, a golf course, a luau, a strip mall and three hotels on the complex which is gated off. We saw all three hotels and still decided that the JW was exactly where we belonged.
There were three main disadvantages to the JW, compared to the other two hotels, and I'll get to those.
But the one main advantage, which beat out the others for me, was the location of our room.
I cannot express this point enough, but if you stay here,  PAY EXTRA FOR THE DELUXE OCEANVIEW ROOM!
The JW has rooms that are the closest to the actual ocean. The Disney property as well as the other Marriott property are set pretty far back from the ocean. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd post a video of the sound of the ocean crashing onto the rocks outside our room. Beautiful. And if it became too loud, you could easily close the balcony doors, and you had complete silence. There were enormous screen doors, so you really enjoy the fresh air.  Our room was on the 12th floor. The sunsets from our balcony were not to be believed!
And the second highlight is that the balcony is very large!!! The other two hotel balconies were small in comparison. The rooms were very nice and comfortable. We were upset that they didn't offer cribs for babies, but 'pack and plays'. This probably is not the best resort for kids, but we were there for a conference so we had no choice.
Other than that, the hotel is just nice. Nothing spectacular. It's starting to show its age.
The pool is AWFUL. It's a circle that looks ridiculously small for the size of the hotel. But in February, we weren't swimming all that much. It was extremely breezy, with the high temperature being upper 70's to low 80's our entire week.
The weather was absolutely beautiful for everything else, but not so much for swimming.  Unfortunately, since it was a little chilly, and the pool was not heated, the few kids that were at the property all sat in the hot tub, which was only supposed to be for people over the age of 10. And the hot tub wasn't even hot.
The beaches at all three hotels are exactly the same. The sand is very course, but clean and the water was nice.
The other two areas that the other hotels in Ko Olina  may have over the JW is that they are time share facilities so they are larger with kitchens, dining rooms, washers and dryers.
The pool areas at the other two resorts were far superior to the pool at the JW. Especially for kids. The pool at the JW was so bad, that if I were a kid at this hotel and actually saw the pool areas at the other two resorts, I'd bawl like a baby.
Fortunately for us, my Aunt was staying at the other Marriott property at the same time, and were able to use the pool for the day as her guests. FOR THE DAY is the operative word here.
The Marriott and the Disney resorts are EXTREMELY STRICT with their pool areas.  At the Marriott, there were people wearing all sorts of wristbands. We wore red, for being a guest, the timeshare owners wore yellow, and if you were able to ride the waterslide you had to wear another bracelet to show you could swim. My sons had to take a swim test to be able to use the waterslide.
Also, there is security EVERYWHERE on the Marriott property. So don't think you'll be able to pool hop.
It was low season there, and I can't imagine how packed the Marriott pool would be if it was at full occupancy.
We also toured the Disney property and took the vacation club time share lecture.
This allowed us to see the entire property. It was OK. The rooms were nice, the balconies were small, the pool area was fantastic  (waterslide , lazy river) but the restaurant options on the property were very very very expensive, and limited, and when the third building opens, I have no idea where they are going to put everyone. The grounds of the Disney resort were very nice. I loved the pool area and the little cave where you could view the pretty fish. You can actually snorkel in that little pool (for an extra cost, of course).
Both the Marriott and the Disney resorts seemed vast and large. I don't know how to put it other than saying that they weren't very 'warm' or 'welcoming'.  They were filming the Kelly Ripa show while we were there. There were a lot of people around for that.

The JW has three restaurants on site. We only ate at the casual restaurant for dinner once, when they offered a valentines day buffet. The other nights we ate near the excursions we took or the strip mall, which was within walking distance from the JW.  We also ate at Roy's on the golf course which was wonderful but fully  booked.  It seemed everyone wanted to eat there. if you want to eat there during your stay, make reservations early.
There is a shuttle that stops at all three resorts, and at some points during the day, stops at the golf course and the Paradise Cove luau.
We visited Pearl Harbor, Hanauma bay for snorkeling  (skip that. Although its a pretty location, it was crowded and the water was very murky. The best snorkeling we've ever done was in Cozumel, and this did not compare. That clarity of the water in Cozumel was much better. )
We also rented a car and drove all over the island. We drove to the Dole pineapple factory, the north shore (you MUST see those waves! ) and even tried the flea market at the aloha stadium. (great place for souvenirs!)
All in all, we really enjoyed Oahu and the JW.
