“Rustic, with a beautiful view and warm, friendly people.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2011

I stayed here for four nights in a very decent, renovated studio. It had two queen beds, kitchenette, AC and tropical ceiling fan, a small but nice bathroom, and a lanai overlooking the pool and the mangroves of Kaneohe Bay. In the background was a beautiful view of the Koolau Mountains. You could hear the birds singing morning and evening in this lush, green tropical setting. Breakfast every morning with fresh papaya, pineapple, and yogurt. Wednesday evenings offers a great buffet dinner and great Hawaiian entertainment. The staff is warm and friendly expressing much Aloha. The facilities are old and construction crews are working six days a week to renovate the buildings and rooms which do need repair work. The resort is built on a hillside and you have to go up and down stairs. This is an excellent getaway for an independent traveler like me, and I saw families with children here too. I will definately stay here again on my next regular trip to Oahu.

This place was so awesome I don't know where to begin! Just recently, the Paradise Bay Resort was newly acquired by a wonderful couple who are so personable and friendly. All the bad reviews must have come from travelers who visited before the new owners took over. The gal is an architect and she said she plans on revamping the whole site, which is essentially a block of independent condos, houses, the works. It is a little sketchy from the outside, but fabulous on the inside!
Our room was massive, and this is compared to the 2 other places in Oahu we stayed at a comparable price. It had everything we needed, including a spacious refridgerator and microwave. Beautiful bedding, tons of storage, laminate wood flooring, and a lanai that was the size of another room! Everything was really modern, which isn't common on the island (at least not at this price). The best part about the room was the breath-taking view, which overlooked Kaneohe Bay and mountains in the distance. Extremely private, romantic, and clean! Oh and if you're a bug-a-phobe, like I am, rest assured they take care of the pest so you won't run into the common roaches of Hawaii :)
The staff--blew me away! They are one big, smiling family who welcomed us in as their own! My son is a handful, and they all made him feel so special, they were so friendly with him! They also serve breakfast every morning, and if you were to go to say, IHOP, you'd drop a good 40 dollars on comparable food! On Wednesday nights, they have a live band come in and perform while you get FREE dinner. And it's not slop! The cook, who is also the manager, can throw down in the kitchen! It's so awesome to get a home cooked meal when you're on vacation. They also served yummy Mai Tais! I wish I was back, this was the best experience I've had on vacation!

Stay from Wednesday to Saturday, Buffet dinner and Hawaiian Music on Wednesdays, Mojitos and local style appetizer on Friday nights, free kayaking. They are renovating but it was still peaceful, my room was on the canal, nothing to do but chill on my deck and read my book, that what I came for, papaya's for breakfast this was right out of a book, I'm going back!

This hotel is off the beaten path in a real Hawaiian neighborhood. From some of the reviews, some people should never leave the resort area of Waikiki. We only stayed here one night. Because of airline schedules we had to spend a night on Oahu (which we usually try to avoid) en-route to Kaua'i and Lana'i. This hotel seemed to be the ticket. We were going to the Polynesian Cultural Center the next day and then flying out. We just needed a place to sleep. Well as it turns out I would have been comfortable staying here several days.
It needs to be mentioned that this hotel is under new management and it appears that it has needed some tender loving care for some years. It is now getting it. We stayed in one of the renovated rooms and it was very nice. The setting is beautiful. The Continental Breakfast was more than adequate.
If I am ever stuck on Oahu again, I will surely stay here.

Thank you for staying with us! We are located close to Polynesian Cultural Center, with a peacful windward Oahu location that is vastly different from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. We've been working extremely hard on renovations since taking over resort ownership, and hope to welcome you back on your next trip to the Islands. Aloha!

In the past, we’ve enjoyed staying at Schrader’s Windward Country Inn, now known as Paradise Bay Resort and Spa. Until recently, Mr. Schrader operated this resort in the same “family” tradition as he did 40 years ago. Earlier this year, Mr. Schrader passed away and the Inn was sold to a couple who are in the process of flipping this property. Leading up to our recent stay, we were not advised that the Inn was involved in a remodel. If we had known about the constant noise from 8:00 AM through 5:30 PM, we would not have stayed here. After all, we came here to relax. In addition, the construction crew’s vehicles hogged the limited parking that is available for guests. The room that we stayed in was one of those that were recently remodeled. Our room’s remodel consisted of replacing the carpet with laminate, installing new ceiling fans, and minimally updating the kitchen and bathroom. During our stay, we’ve also seen the once complimentary boat ride and snorkeling trip incur a charge. They have also started charging for the use of their kayak. The once great continental breakfast has also been cut back considerably. In addition, the once really nice Wednesday night dinner, has been reduced to just snacks.
Part of the charm of Schrader’s Inn, for us, was being around the hard working, friendly, lower income Hawaiians that live in the area and who work at Schrader’s Inn. We enjoyed interacting with the Hawaiians and we were happy to see that most of them have not lost that Aloha spirit in spite of the intrusion from the outside world. The relatively low price always reflected the fact that the Inn wasn’t located in the best side of town and the Inn itself was, let’s say, “Rustic”. The mildly disturbing crowing roosters, barking dogs and feral cats running around the area were offset by the “included” perks, great view of the mountains and bay from our room and the reasonable price. Once the remodel is completed, surely the price of a room will go up and the “included perks” will continue to go down. There is nothing that the new owners can do to change the baggage that comes with the area. In addition, the increase in price and decrease in “included” amenities will more than likely make this Inn less popular. I no longer see this resort as a value and I will begin to look elsewhere for that Family run, rustic place to stay on the Island.

We are so sorry to hear that you were disappointed on your last stay. At the time of your stay, we had only just recently changed ownership and begun renovations. We apologize for the inconvenience of the construction, but can assure you that we are nearing completion and look forward to welcoming you back with an entirely fresh, new look. Our staff remains the same caring people who have worked at the resort for many years. We have also carefully considered all guest feedback to create a very special Wednesday Aloha Night with buffet dinner and live music, as well as Saturday boat cruise to the Sandbar. We hope that you will give us a chance to share our aloha with you again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Aloha! We are very excited to announce the completion of our room and property renovations. We will continue to enhance the property as other resorts do, however the bulk of work is complete. We appreciate all of the input we received both positive and negative and we have used it to get to the point we are today. We were recently awarded the 2014 TripAdvisor Award of Excellence. We are blessed to be part of what we all consider to be the most beautiful tropical setting in the Hawaiian Islands. Now the property, accommodations and warm staff complement our surroundings. We call ourselves True Hawaii and what does that mean? Our setting reveals the answer. We are located in a panorama of spectacular natural and tropical beauty, from amazing Hawaiian mountain ranges and lush tropical landscape, to beautiful Kaneohe Bay, Chinaman's Hat Island and out to the Pacific Ocean. We border an ancient Hawaiian fishpond surrounded by lush tropical mangroves. The Kahuona Fishpond is one of the last remaining working fishponds and is designated a historical site. We are the only resort property with private access to Kaneohe Bay. Kaneohe Bay hosts the most abundant and diverse sea life and reef system in the Hawaiian Islands and our guests can access it safely right from the resort. Our design fits with the environment and has a contemporary and authentic Hawaiian look and feel. We thank our guests who have stayed with us in the past and helped to support us. We appreciate your patience with the renovations and know you will be delighted on your next stay. The property, guest rooms, new amenities, services and warm staff are here to take care of you. We offer our guests the same entertainment, special Saturday sand bar excursion and we have added a few more; a Friday evening Firedance Show, additional live Hawaiian music and surprise cultural classes. We have added some new things such as; a fitness room, Wi-Fi, on call spa service, new pool and hot tub, new floating lounge areas, conference room, intimate wedding ceremonies and we are pet friendly. We have renovated and upgraded our guestrooms with; new furnishings, artwork, premium pillow top mattresses, luxurious bedding and linens as well as new flat screen TV's and IPod docks.Kayak use is still included and we also have Standup Paddle Boards and private boat charter available. We look forward to seeing you the next time you come to Paradise. Warm Aloha, David and Stephanie Ryan ... more   less
