This was our first dining experience at Pah Ke's. My aunt has raved about this restaurant for years but I never was inclined to try it. We had a banquet prepared by chef Raymond. I was pleasantly surprised that a hole in the wall Chinese restaurant in Kaneohe could serve an incredible gourmet meal. A little bit of background information that I learned...Raymond was formerly a chef at Alan Wong's in Honolulu and he also was a pastry chef at the Halekulani. Thus, he is very qualified to present a great dining experience. He is also very entertaining and explains the artistic and culinary background behind each course of food.
He makes an eggwhite wonton soup which was amazing and a must-try dish. For appetizers, we were served "chinese nachos" with mashed potatoes (sounds odd but tastes great). We also enjoyed classic dishes including: peking duck and steamed fish over fresh tofu, His meals are prepared without MSG and dairy.
The most incredible part of the meal was the dessert tray. It totally shocked me (in a nice way) until someone explained to me his background as a pastry chef. He had a variety of cakes, pastries, and ice creams. We enjoyed the lilikoi cheese cake and red velvet macaroons. Hands down the best dessert I ever had at ANY restaurant ANYWHERE!
The only issue with Pah Ke's is that it is a bit of a drive from Waikiki. Also, don't expect the place to look like Alan Wongs or Mariposa. Do expect a great meal presented by a friendly and entertaining chef.
