“Great value, wonderful hosts, perfect little room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2011

I was nervous staying here because it was so affordable and rentals on Oahu can be a total crapshoot. This place was perfect. We stayed in the smaller room for $85 a night. It was a tiny little room, but had a great big comfy bed, nice desk, and was arranged optimally for the space. Air Conditioner was used (as air doesn't flow well through the room given that its not open on two sides), and worked great. The house itself was private and beautiful, with great friendly hosts who invited me to share dinner with them the first night I arrived (and was so exhausted, I fell asleep and didn't get to partake, unfortunately). They had a great outdoor sink area where I could rinse out all my dive gear, and a nice little pool area with beautiful gardens. The room was immaculate with nice little breakfast and kitchenette provided. Great value and perfect for a stay on Oahu. Kailua is about my favorite beach in the world, and I was so happy to have a place to come to and visit :-)

“LOVED IT!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2010

We really enjoyed our stay at Auntie Barbara's cottage. Have stayed at many beachhouses while our kids were growing up and this is one of our favorites! So many conveniences: Nice towels, shampoos, sunscreens, beach towels & chairs & more. Milk, bread, juices and other breakfast items provided when we arrived. So nice we didn't have to find a store when we got there. Everything you'd need (pots & pans. etc.) to cook was there. Great sleeping arrangements, nice sheets. Everyone got their own space and privacy. Lots of closet space for our daughters' things (and you know they brought everything!) We appreciated the use of the washer dryer. We were allowed to use the owner's grill, swimming pool and lovely outdoor eating space. Good location - very short, easy walk to the beautiful beach. Barbara and Joe were warm and accommodating. Very nice hosts! We would love to stay there again if it wasn't so far away from our Wilmington, NC home. I highly recommend it!

“Okay, provided you don't want to sit up talking after 10pm”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2009

Auntie Barbara's is a series of rooms and extensions attached to a house in Kailua quite near the beach. The accommodation is fairly spacious, and quite good value for money. There are a few shortcomings; our room had a small window but no curtain - so you didn't sleep much after it got light. One part of the main living room is partitioned off by a patio door and has a bed - but it has a thin corrugated roof that bakes in the sun and the area gets very hot. The kitchen area is adequate, but we found a few cockroaches were entering under a door that led to the main house - fleet-footed creatures that were difficult to stamp on. They came during the first few days of our stay and after that, they stopped coming. Generally the place was clean and spacious and the furniture was comfortable.
You can go and sit in the family's garden and there is a small swimming pool; the garden is also home to about five small and good-natured, though vociferous, dogs. On about the fourth day of our visit we returned at about 10pm and were sitting in the living room talking quietly when Joe, Barbara's husband, knocked on the door and told us to "Keep it down" because neighbours were complaining. We closed every window, turned on the aircon, and continued. We were then phoned by Joe who said his neighbour had complained "the lady was laughing and screaming" and that there was a threat to call the police. When he was told nobody was screaming and that he was being unreasonable, he started saying that "if things don't work out" he would refund our rent and send us packing. We are pretty quiet people and this did cast a shadow over the last few days of the holiday.
