“Breathtaking views! Don't forget your camera!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013

The first part of the trail is steep but the views are breathtaking. The ocean is a light, bright blue and you can easily see the coral beds. We hiked on a warm day and recommend bringing ample water. Upon reaching the first pillbox we found if you stand in front of the pillbox opening the wind will cool you down like natural air conditioning. From the trail base, the first pillbox was about a 20 minute hike. The 2nd is just another 10-15 minute walk. There is some interesting graffiti up there. I recommend doing this hike in the early morning or late afternoon (although we saw people up there all day).

“Beautiful view but....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

We enjoyed the hike up and the beautiful view but... slipped and broke my ankle on the way down. There is a lot of loose dirt and gravel on the trail. Fortunately, we were about 1/4 mile from the trail head, unfortunately we had ridden our bikes to the trail head. After sliding on my bum to the end of the trail, two wonderful women drove us to get the medical help I needed. I just read some other reviews and I'm not the only one who has broken their ankle on this trail. So, enjoy the view but be careful!

“GPS Location wrong!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

We ended up in a neighborhood. Please correct site? We Will try again using another GPS locator rather than the one in this app.

“Hike up, enjoy views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

My wife and I who are both in our 40's did this hike last week, first thing in the morning, around 7 am. It takes about an hour total, going up and down. The views (see pic) and photo-ops are great. Water, sunblock, tennis-shoes, camera recommended.

We only hiked to the 1st & 2nd pillbox (see pic) and then turned around, because we had read that it gets more difficult after that point, and it becomes easier to come down on the OTHER side rather than trek back.

We met a motley crew of young ladies (see pic) who looked like they had spent the night camping on top of one of the pillboxes. They were ex-Californians who were still drinking some Chandon from the night before. They were friendly and allowed us to take photos of them.

There are only about 5-7 parking spots at the base of the climb--1st come, 1st served. GPS it because the place is a little tricky to find. We had to drive around a couple of times before finding it.

Do it, then go grab some "rehydration"!

“This is THE View.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

If you're looking for THE view of the island of Oahu, this is it. The view from the Lanikai Pillboxes provides the type of magic that will make you want to miss your flight home and never go back.

There is some legal parking available right next to the golf course but it was jam packed when we arrived. It wasn't a big deal beause we were able to find some parking a couple of blocks away and just started our trail early.

I saw people of all ages doing this trail from the very young (maybe 3 or 4 years old) to folks who looked like they were in their 70s. We are 29 and 31 and we found it to be pretty easy but you just need to make sure to watch your step as there are some areas that are slippery (but do not fear, some kind samaritans have placed rope on the path to assist you).

There are two major look out points (Pillbox 1 and Pillbox 2). They are both covered in grafitti now (side note- since when is it cool to write your twitter or instagram name all over everything?), but it really humbles you to think that during the war soldiers were couped up in those things for long periods of time just staring out into the water looking for enemies on the front. I think the best spot for a photo here is on the top of pillbox number 2 where there is grafitti that says "home is wherever you are."

From these pillboxes you have a beautiful view of the valley, Lanikai Beach, the Mokulua islands in front of you and Makapuu to your right.

After the second pillbox there is a narrow ridge and the trail continues on- it didn't look like there was much interesting going on over there so we decided not to do it.

We were fortunate to go mid-day on a pretty overcast day but I would still advise to wear plenty of sun screen and bring some water. I've heard that the sunrise view from this spot is one of the best - next time!
