“Lush Tropical Setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2013

Pros: The backyard was stunning and had a variety of seating options. The pool looked very clean. The muffins and fruit that were provided were a blessing after arriving the night before and being too tired to visit a grocery store. A previous poster commented that he/she didn't know how long the muffins had been there. If you read the reviews on TA, look at the availability calendar on the Hula Breeze site, and check the guestbook in the room, you will see that the Hula Breeze is booked solid most of the time, so don't worry about the muffins being ancient. The room was clean. The street was quiet. Parking was adequate. We really appreciated the beach chairs, beach towels and snorkel gear that were provided. We would have had to either lug these things onto the plane or purchase them upon arrival. The beach chairs were top-of-the-line Tommy Bahama chairs, not something cheap and flimsy. The location was super. Although we could have walked to the the beach, we chose to drive rather than carry all our gear. We always found parking at the beach, even on weekends. After visiting Waikiki, we really appreciated the moderate crowds at Kailua Beach. Two grocery stores were fairly close by and could be found on the Kailua map that was provided. The directions from the airport were excellent. We found the rental with no troubles. Allison and Sven were very cordial and helpful. They treated you as more than just a hotel guest. Allison went above and beyond to accommodate a laundry issue we had (more on that in a bit).

Cons: One of the important criteria for us when renting is having access to a washer/dryer. This reduces the amount of clothing we need to pack. While there is access, it is very limited due to the washer/dryer being located under the window of another unit. A note on our fridge said no laundry after 6. A note on the laundry porch said no laundry after 4. So, if you need to do laundry, you will have to give up some of your touring time and get it thrown in by 2:00 if you want to meet the earlier deadline. We spent an afternoon at the beach and thought it really wouldn't be that big of a deal to do our laundry at 5PM, because who sleeps at 5PM? Well, the lady in the next unit went beserk. She went outside and confronted my husband and told him to stop doing laundry because she was resting. We stopped and waited an hour, figuring she was just taking a nap and would eventually wake up to go out for dinner. We resumed laundry at 6 and she began texting the owner that we needed to stop doing laundry. Allison graciously took our laundry and did it in her own personal machine. She even folded it for us. We think maybe the woman in the next unit was not feeling well and we realize we were doing laundry later than the stated time. Basically, the purpose of this comment is a heads-up that you need to take the laundry hours very seriously and, if you don't want to give up beach or touring time to do laundry, pack enough clothes to see you through your vacation. The other con, which is not anyone's fault, is the orientation of the house. We felt marvelous trade winds when sitting by the pool, but as soon as we entered the house, there was no breeze. The windows on the house do not face the direction of the ocean, so the breezes off the ocean do not enter your room. We ran the optional air condtioning at night and this made things comfortable.

All in all, we were happy with our choice and Kailua definitely beat Waikiki for relaxation.

Room Tip: I think there are actually three rooms here: The Palm and the Pineapple are the two we heard about...

Aloha,

We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and appreciate you taking the time to wrtie a review!

We do limit the laundry hours so as not to disturb other guests and to work around our housekeeping needs. Since we have travelers from all over the world, often times folks are dealing with jet lag and we never know when someone might be napping!

Thanks so much for understanding!

Warm Regards, Allison

We had a wonderful time staying in the Pineapple Room at the Hula Breeze for our honeymoon... spacious, well-appointed, and comfortable room, with plenty of personal touches (loved the welcome message, the delicious muffins, and the champagne!). Allison and her dogs Ringo and Ellie did a lovely job of making us feel at home... they really do embody the aloha spirit.

Definitely worth checking out if you'll be staying in Kailua, which is amazing in and of itself... wonderful beach (which is just a short walk from the B&B) and terrific restaurants made it a welcome respite after the first part of our trip in Waikiki.

Aloha,

We love hearing that we "embody the aloha spirit" and that your experience here was special and memorabe. My husband and I have been together 30 years and feel so honored when couples choose to stay here on their honeymoon! I hope this was a great start to a wonderful life together!

Come back for your anniversary!

Loved Kailua! Loved the Hula Breeze!
I feel guilty that this will be such a short rave review but, basically, you can see what makes the Hula Breeze so special by reading all the other nice things that so many other reviewers have already written. In summary, Kailua is everything 'real and local' in a beachside community - where Waikiki is all things Las Vegas - and the Hula Breeze with hosts Alison and Sven is a home from home - for those not looking for a 14-story hotel block integrated into a shopping mall. We loved every moment and only wish we could have spent longer! Paul & Sue.

Stayed in the Pineapple Room for 3 nights in October 2013.

Please appreciate that this establishment has TWO DIFFERENT ROOMS and self-check-in, so it is possible to check yourself into the wrong room if both rooms are empty upon arrival. Clue #1 – your reservations will indicate “Palm Room” or “Pineapple Suite”, which amazingly matches a permanent sign at each room’s entrance. Clue #2 – A white dry erase white board is posted outside each entrance, with a cute note like “Welcome (your name here)”. When standing at the street and facing the house, the left entrance leads to the Palm Room, the right entrance leads to the Pineapple Suite. I only mention these little details because upon arrival, we found that the other room’s guests failed to recognize either clue.

Excellent hospitality from Sven. He answered many questions about the island and loaned us an island trail book for hiking ideas. We highly recommend the Pill Box hike. The trail head has very little parking, but is only a couple of blocks from the south /east end of Kailua Beach Park, with abundant parking. You could hike from the Hula Breeze, or drive to the beach park to save a half mile of walking each way.

Made the short hike to beautiful Kailua Beach each morning and watched the sunrise. We were treated to a double rainbow one morning. On another morning the beach and roads were constipated with runners in and watchers of a 15K road race.

Excellent communication from Allison. A few days prior to our arrival, Allison needed to travel to the mainland. She provided alternate contact names/phone numbers should we need any assistance while she was gone and Sven was at work. Additionally, Hawaiian Airlines canceled our flights 2 1/2 months before the trip; the ultimate impact was staying at Hula Breeze for 3 nights instead of our originally booked 4 nights. Allison graciously changed the reservation with no charge.

Listing advertised first morning’s coffee and fruit as included. A bowl of fruit (papaya, bananas, apples, oranges) was on the table at check-in; and the fridge had a container of ground coffee and 2 very large tasty banana chocolate muffins.

Would stay again.

After travelling for 3 months all over Europe and USA, we were looking foward to a few days of down time on Oahu without being amongst the rat race of Waikiki. Hula Breeze served that to us in spades. The Pineapple Suite as simply good! We were provided with all amenities of a self contained cottage, it as fun to go food shopping again just for snack essentials thankks to the small kitchen area in place. Sometimes the expensive part of travellng was eating out so having the chance to eat in like being at home was lovely. Everything in the suite was excellent, the bed was to die for in comfyness, the feeling of being at home was very special. Having the chance to be part of a community even for a few days was lovely and made me appreciate Hawaii more than if I was down in Waikiki amongst the tourist traps.

Having lived on Oahu years ago comng back to Kailua felt great and staying at the Hula Breeze was a big component of that.

Every detail in our accommodations was carefully thought through. The casual, homey feel gave our vacation the relaxation we were hoping to find in Hawaii. It was obvious to us that you spend a lot of time making your guests feel at home:) Staying at Hula Breeze was like spending time with a special friend!
