Pros: The backyard was stunning and had a variety of seating options. The pool looked very clean. The muffins and fruit that were provided were a blessing after arriving the night before and being too tired to visit a grocery store. A previous poster commented that he/she didn't know how long the muffins had been there. If you read the reviews on TA, look at the availability calendar on the Hula Breeze site, and check the guestbook in the room, you will see that the Hula Breeze is booked solid most of the time, so don't worry about the muffins being ancient. The room was clean. The street was quiet. Parking was adequate. We really appreciated the beach chairs, beach towels and snorkel gear that were provided. We would have had to either lug these things onto the plane or purchase them upon arrival. The beach chairs were top-of-the-line Tommy Bahama chairs, not something cheap and flimsy. The location was super. Although we could have walked to the the beach, we chose to drive rather than carry all our gear. We always found parking at the beach, even on weekends. After visiting Waikiki, we really appreciated the moderate crowds at Kailua Beach. Two grocery stores were fairly close by and could be found on the Kailua map that was provided. The directions from the airport were excellent. We found the rental with no troubles. Allison and Sven were very cordial and helpful. They treated you as more than just a hotel guest. Allison went above and beyond to accommodate a laundry issue we had (more on that in a bit).
Cons: One of the important criteria for us when renting is having access to a washer/dryer. This reduces the amount of clothing we need to pack. While there is access, it is very limited due to the washer/dryer being located under the window of another unit. A note on our fridge said no laundry after 6. A note on the laundry porch said no laundry after 4. So, if you need to do laundry, you will have to give up some of your touring time and get it thrown in by 2:00 if you want to meet the earlier deadline. We spent an afternoon at the beach and thought it really wouldn't be that big of a deal to do our laundry at 5PM, because who sleeps at 5PM? Well, the lady in the next unit went beserk. She went outside and confronted my husband and told him to stop doing laundry because she was resting. We stopped and waited an hour, figuring she was just taking a nap and would eventually wake up to go out for dinner. We resumed laundry at 6 and she began texting the owner that we needed to stop doing laundry. Allison graciously took our laundry and did it in her own personal machine. She even folded it for us. We think maybe the woman in the next unit was not feeling well and we realize we were doing laundry later than the stated time. Basically, the purpose of this comment is a heads-up that you need to take the laundry hours very seriously and, if you don't want to give up beach or touring time to do laundry, pack enough clothes to see you through your vacation. The other con, which is not anyone's fault, is the orientation of the house. We felt marvelous trade winds when sitting by the pool, but as soon as we entered the house, there was no breeze. The windows on the house do not face the direction of the ocean, so the breezes off the ocean do not enter your room. We ran the optional air condtioning at night and this made things comfortable.
All in all, we were happy with our choice and Kailua definitely beat Waikiki for relaxation.
