“nice walk along the dam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

If the weather is great (not too hot, maybe some misty rain), you can walk along the dam that separates Kailua from the Kawai Nui Marsh and see lots of different birds, many endangered. Today we saw stilts, herons, plovers, moor hens, bulbuls, Brazilian cardinals, and lots of ducks.

“It's new”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

Kawai Nui Marsh is something new. Lots of ducks, birds, and greenery. As one who grew up here I can say that I thought this was something different when I first saw it. You don't see this everywhere.

It can get hot, so a bottle of water is advised. Also something that can provide you with shade. The morning time and an hour or two before sunset is the best time to visit. It provides great lighting for photos. There are also a lot of people who exercise on the wall that sits in between.

Hope you like the view (:

“Great place for a casual walk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2012

A local volunteer civic group has done a fantastic job in restoring and preserving this historic marshland. There is a lovely park area to relax and picnic landscaped with native plants and a great walkway to observe native flora and fauna.

“Beautiful, peaceful place to walk.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2012

I walk at Kawai Nui quite often and just love it. It is quiet and peaceful and away from traffic. On any given day you can see 20-30 species of birds. A true gem.

“Mark the Marsh”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2012

The Kawainui Marsh trail is actually part of the flood control efforts to protect Kailua. The "trail" is a walking path the follows the flood control wall. Don't expect to see a lot of wildlife near the trail, most of the birds probably prefer to inhabit the more central parts of the marsh that are away from humans and the trail.

Views of the Koolaus and all the greenery are the best part of the walk.

I highly recommended visiting the heiau which is part of the marsh and is being lovingly restored by local residents. It is quite an impressive monument to Hawaiian antiquities and the auwai (waterways) that feed the taro and banana patches can give you a real sense of how Hawaiians ingeniously conducted their farming.
