“Perfect Place to Relax”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2012

My husband & I travelled with our 6yo to Turtle Bay for a wedding. Initially we were staying 3 nights but after seeing the web page activities list we changed it to 6 nights. We had booked a standard room which was a larger than average size for a hotel room. It had a decent sized balcony with 2 chairs with sweeping views of the coast line. I believe every room in the hotel would have a wonderful view of some type with the way it is set out. We tried every restaurant except Ola and found the food to be great. Our favorite was probably the Hang Ten bar by the pool, great food, cocktails and service.
My son did Surf lessons at the Hans Hedemann surf school which was super easy to book right in the lobby and he also did a kids horse ride at the stables. The lady at the stables was wonderful and taught him how to care for the horses and was very informative on the local area and what to see/do.
I made good use of the day spa, the ladies in there really know how to take care of you, take a book and sit in the relaxation area between treatments and soak up the atmosphere.
I do recommend taking your own car up there, the local beaches only a few minutes up the road are amazing and if you get sick of resort food there is nothing else you can walk to but there are other food options/trucks/supermarkets only 10min up the road.
My only gripes about the place - there was a movie being filmed at the time that we were not advised of & one morning I accidently jogged onto the set putting security into a panic & resulting in me having to jog back miles along the highway. (the filming in the area also meant our kayak trip was cancelled) I then gave up jogging and used the gym which is tiny and in bad need of an upgrade (which I believe is happening in the new year?)
Also the self laundry, there are only 3 machines and a lot of people! One day I went to the laundry every 30min for 6hrs and couldn't get a machine available.

Room Tip: Any in the hotel, they all are away from lifts & have amazing views.

We stayed in Waikiki for 2 nights before moving to the North Shore and Turtle Bay. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. When we got to Turtle Bay we said, "Finally - this is the Hawaii we have been looking for!". The restaurant, Ola is a little pricey but worth it. You get to sit next to tiki torches after dark right in front of the little cove and it feels like your own private beach. The room was very large, but the bed and furniture/fixtures were unimpressive. The view is AMAZING as each room has a panoramic window wall and balcony. Would recommend this to anyone - old, young, couples, families.

Mahalo for rating us on TripAdvisor! We are happy to hear that you consider Turtle Bay to be True Hawaii. We are glad that you loved the views and the unique setting at Ola's. We are sad to hear that the room fixtures and furniture were unimpressive. However, we are pleased to let you know that the hotel will begin major renovations very soon. We would love for you to come back and experience the changes once they are done! Mahalo!

If you are a tourist and want to see the touristy sites this is not the hotel for you. Don't come here with a pre-paid package. Once they have your money it is next to impossible to get any leverage on them.....like getting a room when you check in. Yes if you book a pre-paid package and you have to check in late...say 9 PM....well they already let our room go enough said. And the most annoying thing about this place is how their policies treat you like an 18 year old college student, i.e. 25 dollar "lost towel card" fee. For smokers....if you smoke on that balcony it is a 250 (yes two-fifty) dollars if "they find any evidence of smoking on the balcony". Not that I smoke but for those that do and go outdoors this to do it this is NOT the place for you. This isn't my first time to HI by any means but this place isn't what it used to be.

Most beautiful place to stay while on Oahu is Turtle Bay resort. Great service, incredible views, unbelievable rooms. We were in the most beautiful suite that you could have had board meetings in complete with 2 bathrooms, a master bedroom with balcony, a living room with balcony. The service was second to none and the views and amenities of this hotel were absolutely breath taking! We also enjoyed a day at the spa and had the best person do our makeup!

We stayed here for 2 nights after a week in the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, it was the perfect place to chill out and relax.
The location is fantastic and we had a spectacular view from our room which was really nicely furnished and very comfortable.
There is a lovely relaxed feeling about the resort, a gorgeous little beach for ideal for swimming and some really nice restaurants to try.
Ideal spot for discovering the north shore.

A lot has been said about the dated decor and I agree, but for the rate we paid I was happy to stay in dated decor and be able to experience the lovely north shore of Oahu. So it all comes down to getting a good value or not. I don't understand the rude comments on the quality of guests or how little traveled they must be to appreciate this property. We are very well traveled and have stayed at 5 star properties and enjoyed them greatly, but we also paid a very high premium to have the luxuries and attention to detail.

The good: Good sized rooms with amazing views. Staff was mostly friendly. Good food at both Olas and Lei Leis.

Needs improvement: With the remodel I am sure the rooms will improve, but above and beyond that the restaurant prices appear astronomical even by resort and Hawaii prices. $27 for a so so breakfast buffet, $16 for a burger and another $8 for fries is unbelievable. Front desk staff was hit or miss and the misses are very dissapointing when they are your first impression of the level of Aloha at a property. Surfer Bar's electronic bill board listed happy hour was available on a specific date and when we went there was in fact no happy hour due to a special event. "Best Happy Hour" on the island advertised for Hang 10 bar in the literature in the room key book was not available and according to the waitress they haven't had a happy hour for quite some time.

These are minor issues that are tolerable if you got a great value as we did. But after the remodel, I am sure the room rates will increase and these issues should not occur.

We had a lovely time enjoying the scenic north shore, and driving around the island. I would not hesitate to return given the right price. The views from the lobby and the property are amazing and we saw one of the most beautiful sunsets of our life while on this trip.

The views and surrounding nature are the highlight of this hotel. Horse trail and ride was great. Most of the lobby was updated, rooms were a nice size, infinity pool overlooking the ocean was beautiful...that's about it.

The hotel itself was just decent; in need of updates, cleaning and maintenance...sand was everywhere in the hotel, gross! There is not much food anywhere nearby the hotel, so the hotel takes advantage of this with over priced so-so food. The restaurants were definitely NOT worth the price; breakfast alone was about $20! The bedding was poor, pillows flat (I needed 3!) and comforter was lumpy. Internet slow. This side of the island is also way too windy and overcast to really enjoy the beach and pool --- I was always too cold.

Customer service was also just average. We asked about dinner reservations and were told the wait was just 10 mins. Instead of making a reservation for us, we walked to the restaurant and had to wait nearly an hour. Staff had no initiative to better service their guests. Unacceptable for a so called 4 star resort.

If you just want to get out of the city and away from traffic, Turtle Bay is a nice option...overall, just a little to over priced in my opinion.
