Aloha again! OK, I'll be brutally honest with you, the Forty Niner in Aiea at the corner of Honomanu and Kam Highway is not, repeat not, haut cuisine. Not even close. But then again, it doesn't have any pretensions to superficial frills or fuss--zero, nada, zilch--but we love the place. It gets an all-around excellent just for being plain good. Just down the street and around the corner, it's one of our favorite Saturday/Sunday morning breakfast joints. The food is uncomplicated and simple, but hot, quick, and good--standard breakfast fare with some local flair (i.e., spam, portugee sausage, haupia syrup smothered mac nut pancakes and so on) (don't panic mainlanders--they have 'normal' breakfast items too), 'diner' lunch menu (sandwiches and burgers and fries), and traditional 'home-cooked-style' dinner menus (pork chops with brown gravy, steaks and fries, etc.). My significant other loves their Veggie Omelet; I'm a fan of BLT sandwiches for breakfast. I have eaten there for dinner when I'm left to fend for myself, we've stopped by for lunch once or twice, and it's been all good--never disappointed--but as I said, I don't go in looking for foie gras or caviar. The prices are amazingly reasonable--I don't think I've ever left there spending more than $20 or so (for the both of us, tip usually included). The parking is very limited and cramped, but they're adding on additional spaces as I write this (late Nov 2011). (Tip: park at the KFC.) The seating inside is principally a few booths, two large, sometimes shared tables, or a lunch counter--again, all good. The wait staff is super friendly, happy to answer questions if you're a first-timer, and responsive (it's kinda small so they "got nowhere else to go" (a la Richard Gere in 'Officer and a Gentleman'). In short, they keep your coffee cup and water glasses filled, but they don't hang on you. Highly recommended as a great pitstop on the way up Kam Hwy to the North Shore or after a visit to the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet or Arizona Memorial--it's just around the corner, just less than a mile...Ewa direction, brah!, Chance 'em.... :) Cheers and Aloha!
