“Stay Away from Kaluakoi Resort AKA West Molokai Resort”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2009

Rented a VRBO condo at Kaluakoi Resort on the west end of Molokai 5/09 and it was terrible. The whole area was once developed by the Japanese but they left lock, stock, and barrel years ago for political and water-rights issues, I think. Anyway, owners/investors are stuck with these condos while the area goes un-maintained and is returning to nature. Golf course gone, pool seen in the pamphlets boarded up, feral cats everywhere. Some beautiful, uncrowded beaches nearby, but no restaurants or stores for miles; need to go into town 20 miles away for everything. Love the island...Kalaupapa (Leper colony) hike, isolated beaches, diving/snorkeling, unspoiled / un-touristy atmosphere, but the Molokai Hotel on the west end is better kept, has A/C (I'm from Alaska), and about the best outdoor restaurant on the island. And good luck getting a rental car; had one booked but the reservation disappeared, so we found a nice local who rented us their car for $25/day. Without their generosity, the trip would have been a bust. Great island; hope it stays unlike the others.

The West Molokai Resort is a quaint polynesian style condominium project on the west end of Molokai. The West Molokai grounds are well
maintained, however their easements run adjacent to the old Kaluakoi Hotel which was closed down back in 2000. Since the condos were built
in conjunction with the hotel they share much of the common area including the pool. After the hotel closure its new owner the Molokai
Ranch has neglected the hotel property including the easements and the pool which is used by West Molokai owners and their guest. This is unfortunate for the West Molokai Resort and its guest. If you are to stay at these condos, you must do your homework. The units are privately owned and vary in size and amenities. You`re better off renting a cottage, or an upstairs unit with a loft, as these have more room and most have been upgraded by the owners. My family and I have been enjoying our vacations at the West Molokai Resort for over ten years, long before the hotel`s closure. The area is very remote, quiet and most of all relaxing. In short, if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle and if your not too high maintainance you`ll probably enjoy the experience, otherwise you`re better off going to Maui.

This condo association is right on the ocean and overlooks the golf course. The grounds are neglected, the pool needs work and the locals use the pool every day, using it like a community pool. Great views, the little sundries shop and a nice shop for souveniers and aloha wear remains open. This resort was once a beautiful place and it has been closed for five years. Each condo is owned privately and the restaurant is closed. Our condo had nice furniture, but the unit needed to be painted, cleaned and had peeling paint on the lanai and the windows which was not very pleasant. It wasn't what we would call clean either. If you are going to Molokai, would suggest staying in Paniolo Hale or KeNaniKai condos instead. This was a big disappointment to us. This was our 13th trip to Hawaii and our first and last trip to Molokai.
