My husband and I arrived late due to a late ferry from Maui and getting our rental car. At first I was worried when I noticed the closed front desk, but I walked back to the bar where Hans (night manager) greeted me and checked us in. After we settled into our rooms, although late (10pm bar closed 10:30) my husband and I enjoyed a drink while uncle Mel played his eukelele. The staff were all friendly and helpfull, the rooms were clean (although is could have used a good mopping) We enjoyed hearing the nightly entertainment from our rooom in the evenings. I hated to leave as I fell in love with the land as well as the people. We had a gecko lizard who came by and visited in the morning. This hotel is a great value and family friendly. Hula shores breakfasts were a great value and portions were huge. Dinner was ok, a little pricey but service was wonderful. Thank you Hotel Molokai!

We stayed at Hotel Moloka'i only one night in June 2008. There are not too many other choices on the island for a one-night stay. We needed 2 rooms and they were booked up with a large teenage church group that were taking all the large rooms. I called the property directly and made it clear that we needed one large bed and a 2nd bed for my 12 year old daughter.

When we arrived they were very nice about the fact that our room had been given to the church group and offered us one of only 2 upstairs oceanfront rooms. They were very nice about the issue of needing two beds so they had maintenance staff move a twin bed up into the oceanfront room (at same cost) with the existing king bed. However, this cramped the room intensely.

They have tried hard to refurbish this property and the bedding was really nice, but they are still open air plywood construction, with nice new paint. In looking around I would definitely not stay in the back garden rooms - not enough ventilation if it is hot. Also, the back garden rooms are noisier and not much privacy.

The oceanfront room was fantastic, great balcony over the waterfront and nice falling asleep to the lapping waves. There is no swimming beach in front of this hotel. Food at restaurant was OK. We went to the Pizza Cafe and we did not like the food.

“Not rushing back”

Hotel Molokai

We booked our stay at this hotel, as there are not many choices on Molokai. Our kids had a blast in the pool, which was clean and the water was warm. The restaurant was kid-friendly, laid-back, decent food and good entertainment. Also, nice to dine on the water. Small beach, not great for swimming, but fine for a short walk.

We really did want a casual place, not looking for a fancy resort etc. Our room looked like it was recently remodeled with attractive decor. Housekeeping was okay, a few minor issues. There were lots of stains on both the carpet and throw pillows on the beds. My HUGE issue is that there were fleas and ants in the beds when we pulled back the sheets. I wouldn't be thrilled about this at any price, let alone the price that we paid. Yuck.

Things get pretty loud at night with the live entertainment, guests, not to mention the roosters and dogs etc. It probably didn't help that our room was right by the pool/bar.

Overall, several good things about this property but not worth the money we spent and the insects in our beds.

“Dilapidation Setting In”

Hotel Molokai

Recently stayed at this place for the Memorial weekend. Had never been to Molokai and found this place online. We got the local rate of $122 per night. I can't believe they'd charge too much more than that. First off, the place is more like a cottage or cabin than a hotel room and since there are four units per building, if you've got loud neighbors, you're in trouble. The moment we got there my wife pulled the curtains on the sliding back door and the whole thing came down. I managed to put it back up, but that didn't leave me with a great impression. We had some plumbing problems with the shower (backed up quick) and a couple of times it looked like the toilet might overflow, but it didn't. The front desk clerk was friendly enough and one of the waitresses was friendly too, but other than that, the other staff didn't seem particularly friendly. I might stay here again in a pinch, but would probably rent a condo next time. The ocean comes right up to the complex (it seems a stretch to call it a hotel), but there is not much beach to walk on. If you walk out into the water, the water is murky and the bottom is muddy. The food at the restaurant wasn't great and seemed overpriced. The Pizza Cafe down the road was much better and reasonably priced.

I am glad we stayed here first and then went to a big resort on Maui for a few days. Because if we had gone in reverse, we probably would have been disappointed here.

Molokai is great for anyone looking for a very authentic old time Hawaiian experience, not for those looking for the big fancy resorts that hold your hand every step of the way.

This a great little place among not very limited choices on Molokai. There was no AC, the bed was comfy and the bedding very up-scale, it squeaked. The bathroom was clean, but very motel like. We had a cute little table and chairs on the veranda that was nice and relaxing in the afternoon and evening. Think very cute motel, not a hotel...

The resort is right on the water, the pool was very cold (not heated in the winter, maybe in summer?) and the bar/restaurant was happening. In fact we later learned that it was one of the best on the island and had a new chef from Top Chef... ooo la la. The food was very good, albeit plain - from breakfast to dinner.

We checked in on New Years Eve, and were rather bummed when we found out that NYE dinner at the hotel was by reservation only and they would not make exceptions for hotel guests, nor had they set aside any space for hotel guests..... We found a space at the bar and they served us there.... against the waitresses will.... However the host was very nice and made sure we were having fun.

The front desk was very helpful in suggesting tours - but the hours the front desk and excursion desk are staffed are totally on Hawaiian time....
