“boys night out...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

Went to Tokyo Tei, just down the street abit from where I live to have a dinner w/my Japanese neighbor, who is a long time regular there, and another friend. As most of the other reviewers here have stated this place is very down home, very local and pretty good. We all 3 had the Teishoku Trays, which come with very good miso soup, Koko (salted cabbage) and of course the ubiquitous white rice. My two friends both opted for the B tray w/Toyko Teis beloved teriyaki steak (cooked how you like it), Shrimp/Vegetable Tempura and the sashimi that they all come with..15$ I went for the D tray with pork tofu (way more tofu than pork), fried fish w/lime wedges, and the sashimi (was 3 or 4 slices of very fine quality, very fresh ahi sashimi)..14.50$. These 'trays' are a popular order, but they also have a very extensive ala carte menu. Had a beer (they'll ask you if you want it w/a bucket of ice which is very local style). All in all it was a good dinner. Was slow when we got there, right at 6 on a Tuesday, but by the time we left the dining room was full and they were seating others in the back dining room...so they get the business...it's not to hard to find, at least the address, but it is 'hidden' by the ample parking in front of it. If you like off the beaten path places with a huge slice of local life, this is the place, and Home Maid Bakery, famous for their manju amongst other goodies is right next door...

“Hidden Local Spot”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

Typical Japanese fare here. Their speciality is Teriyaki Steak and Shrimp Tempura. We had the shrimp and vegetable tempura $14. and the sashimi for $13.50. The Tempura came hot and lightly battered although a tad greasy, if your a fan of deep fried food this tempura is great.
The sashimi was fine, soft, firm and fresh. The sauces are average. Lunch is served with Miso0 Soup, Koko (salted cabbage), and rice. They offer takeout. All locals here. The restaurant is hidden in the corner of an underground parking structure but very easy to find, if you miss the turn at the large sign continue on and take the very next turn off the hwy. into the underground garage. 1063 E. “Wonderful local Japanese food.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

We had dinner at Tokyo Tei and enjoyed a great local Japanese dinner. My husband had the shrimp tempura. It has a very crispy batter different from traditional tempura. You must try it to believe how tasty and crispy and light it is. I had the chicken tofu--yum! My son had teishoku B--beef teriyaki, shrimp tempura & chicken katsu--he enjoyed it. Portions are large, price reasonable. It's a lively busy family oriented place.

The location is tricky--under a one story building where the parking lot is. No it's not in a basement - it's street level but a covered parking lot is in front. Once you find it you won't regret it. This is where the locals eat. We learned about this place from 2 different Maui residents. We'll eat here again!

“Local-style Japanese food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

If you are 1) a tourist, 2) used to eating Japanese food on the Mainland, 3) are coming to this restaurant for the first time, please continue on to another restaurant. This isn't the one for you.

Tokyo Tei has not changed in decades. It's got a good following of customers, many of whom have been coming for generations. They like it because it is nostalgic and familiar.

Unless you have this sentimental attachment to this restaurant, or to the 1980's-style interpretation of japanese fare, you will probably be disappointed. Basically, it's a greasy spoon. The tempura is oily, the chicken hekka strangely flavored, and the teri steak a bit tough. Maybe that's what you remembered from your childhood, but if your tastes have expanded, you're out of luck.

“When you just want great, no hassle, Japanese cuisine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

A little hard to spot from the street on Lower Main St. No frills, just plan great food. All the standard dishes you would expect. It can get busy at dinner time but it's worth it.
