My husband and I made the decision to stay at the cabins with a good deal of hesitation based on the reviews we read here. I am glad that we decided to take the plunge. First off, let me restate what someone else has said - this is indoor camping, and really nothing more. If you are looking for luxury accomidations this is not the place for you. The cabins were very clean, yet very sparce. (No curtains on the windows, for example....) We had everything that we needed - beds, clean linens, a refrigerator and stove that worked and cooking utensils. The bed frames were rusty but it is the ocean and a very moist enviroment, and that didn't affect the functionality one bit. We stocked up on supplies at the Safeway near the airport (HIGHLY recommended!) so we didn't need anything from the overpriced stores or badly-reviewed restaurants in Hana. Bring lots of bug spray! The views and the access to the Black Sand Beach and the ocean were priceless. We got up in the middle of the night and saw a fabulous sky full of stars, and in the early morning hours took our freshly brewed tea just a few steps outside of our cabin to the ocean and watched an incredible sunrise that made the uncomfortable bed well worth it. Yeah, you could get a bit nicer landscaping and accomidations at the Hotel Hana Maui for 10x the price you pay for these cabins.... no thanks. If you are looking for a highly economical place to spend the night in Hana, I would recommend this - but know what you are getting so that you are not disappointed - this is nothing more than indoor camping, and since it rained the night we were there we were grateful to have a roof over our heads! We drove from the airport to Hana, spent our first night here, enjoyed the beautiful sunrise and the sights of Hana outside of Waianapanapa State Park early before everyone makes the trek over to Hana, and then headed off to Kapalua and luxury hotel living for the next 4 days of our vacation - and I would do it again. Email me if you'd like photos and you can decide for yourself.

OK if you bring your own bedding, cleaning supplies, & don't touch anything...

Since I was trying to do a budget trip to Hawaii with a family of 5, I was excited to find such a cheap cabin to spend a night in. Based on the condition of the cabin, I couldn't see paying a penny more nor staying a night longer.

The previous reviewer is right about the location - it is stunning - wild rainforest right up to the rocky volcanic coast. And it's only a short walk down to the black sand beach (where the jelly fish like to hang out). This is the only thing that keeps these cabins occupied - location.

I've roughed it before, and stayed in some cheap motels, but the shape of this place was "icky". I think that if only the beds were upgraded, it'd be a huge step. The mattresses look like something a kids' summer camp got rid of 10 years ago - plastic, cheap, and not very comfortable. My family all refused to use the shower because it looked so bad. The kitchen had the oldest appliances I've ever seen. AND, they expect guests to do basic cleaning before they leave - sweep, etc. I guess not everyone does... We got there in the evening, stayed on the porch until time to sleep, then left early the next morning - the whole time my family complained to me for making the reservation :(

Oh, and there is no fan or air conditioning. This would be okay if there were enough ventilation to let the breeze through, but there were only a couple small windows that could open, and with all the mosquitoes, you certainly don't want to leave a door open.

The only reason I didn't rate this a "terrible" is again, because the location is fabulous. It's a shame they don't fix up the cabins just a bit, go ahead and charge another $20 a night, then they'd really be a deal!

Go back? Sure, for the day, or if I could use the bbq pit and sleep in my car...

I wrote the below review 2 years ago and still see people disappointed... If your idea of camping is a Motel 6, than this spot isn't for you. It is beautiful, rustic and natural... Yes, you have a kitchen, bathroom and bed. No, it is not the Four Seasons, but it is a step up from Tent Camping (which you can also do here). I normally stay in luxorious conditions on the Western side of the Island. But you can also do that in Tahiti, The Bahamas, Europe, etc.... This spot is only for those who appreciate seeing the Island for the Island... It is dark... great for star gazing... Quiet... great for chatting with friends... Beautiful... watching the beach from some lit restaurant isn't the same. If you are on Maui to see Maui for what it is, spend a romantic trip or just enjoy the peace and quiet than this is for you. My only negative warning to give (which is not Maui's fault) is the Mosquitoes. But buy some Mosquito Coils at Hasegawa's General Store on your way into town and you'll be all set. I'm not even native and am offended that people would exchange room service for quiet, palm trees, and waves lapping. Give it a chance... How much time do you spend in your room anyway?

Maui is my home away from home, I try to go once a year. I normally stay in Honokowai, just North of Lahaina. But I do recommend seeing another part of the island. You go from beautiful beaches to beautiful rainforests. I didn't do it, but watched a friend dive off a waterfall of the side of the road. The cabins are fully equipped and I have always BBQ'd hamburgers at the fire pit behind the cabin. It's perfect for walking along the lava trail along the cliffs and watching the starry skies into the night (you can't get that sky in Lahaina). It's peaceful and secluded from any cities. I usually go for one night during my stay because the drive is long and worth staying over to experience the "Quiet and Natural Maui". The black sand beach is a recommended stop too, just a few minute walk from the cabins.

My girlfriend and I drove the road to Hana recently, and I had acquired a cabin permit at Waianapanapa State Park to stay the night. As we pulled in to the driveway I said "This aint the Hyatt Baby"...this didn't even begin to sum it up. The mattresses were filthy and torn, the kitchen was horrible, and I'd rather have gone to a a port-a-potty than use the restroom. After taking one look around I said "Don't worry...we are NOT staying here" which of course made me her hero. I'm sure these were nice at one time, but they have simply not been kept up. Don't be fooled folks...it's $45 a night that would be MUCH better spent towards the quite reasonable $145 we spent to stay at Hana Kai instead (Thank God for the Vacancy Sign!). Believe me...it's worth the extra money.

I love the area and the Park, and my family and I have used the cabins 5 times over the last 10 years.

Just 8 months ago, we returned and found the cabins very dirty and not kept up like they use to be. Only one burned, beat up pan to cook in.
Only 1 burner on the stove would work and not very good at that. It took me hours to clean the cabin before we could move in and the rent is now up to $42.50 a night. Until I hear that they have cleaned and repaired the cabins and supplied them with necessary cooking supplies, I will not return. This was very disappointing to me and my family and friends as we have in the past rented about 5 cabins at once for reunions etc, and found it be be great fun. Cottages can be rented down in Hana for only $85.00 a night which are very clean and neat. Hawaii State Parks need to investigate as to what the Caretakes at this park are doing since general maintenance on the cabins are clearing not being done. It is really a shame as the park is on such beautiful land next to the ocean and all 6 cabins are beach front. We use to really love going down there for the limited stay of 5 nights. Hope something is done with the cabins soon.
