“A Must-See on Maui - Gorgeous and easy to fit into any schedule”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2009

You'll be amazed at the change in scenery after a 20 minute drive from Kihei. This is so worthwhile - and will easily fit into your schedule. Although you can meander off of the official paths to stay longer, the actual park can be done in 30 minutes. It is lush, peaceful and beautiful. Best to go in the morning or the clouds and mist can come in quickly. On the way out stop at the free Korean garden/peace park for temples, statues and further beauty that surrounds the needle.

“wasn't worth it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2009

Looking at other people's reviews, yes the Iao Needle State Park is lush and beautiful, but I kind of wish I had spent the morning at the beach instead. It only took like 30 minutes to go around and take their paved "hikes" and then there wasn't anything else to do there. Only go if you're looking to kill some time and are done with everything else you wanted to see on the island.

“A little gem overlooked because of it's not by the beaches”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2009

What a lush and beautiful little surprise. Other reviewers remarked how pretty this state park is and it doesn't disappoint. It's a welcome relief frome the salt water. Be sure to bring the bug spray - the mosquitos are definitely out there! And, it does rain quite a bit up there. The hiking trails are not very extensive and they give you a good feel of the aura of the place.

It's a little hard to find. so be sure to have good directions.

“Pretty, but small. Don't expect too much.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2009

It's a pretty place, but it's almost like they started building the park/trails and ran out of money in a month. There's just not too much to it. You can see it in a short amount of time. I kept wishing that the trail would lead further towards the Ioa Needle or at least somewhere. It's worth a visit if you don't allocate too much time or expectations to it.

“Gorgeous Lush Valley (Jurassic Park style)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2009

Many people expect a 2 hour adventure through lush peaks and mountain hikes. Iao Valley is a great place to visit, but don't think for a minute it is a full-day destination. You can easily see everything it has to offer in 1 to 1 and a half hours of walking around.

The lookout point has a couple hundred steps to the top (not too hard.) Once up there, you get a 360 view of the valley: from the Iao Needle to a peak of Wailuku through the valley. This area is gorgeous and as lush as it gets. Up further in the valley (only accessable by helicopter) is where they filmed the helicopter/waterfall landing in the first Jurassic Park movie.
