If the type of travel that energizes you is that of Lonely Planet guidebooks, supper from the corner market or food stand, and swapping travel notes in whatever language you find in common, this place is for you. Everyone on my 757 was going to $400/night Condo/timeshares. Not me. Give me BB in the middle of Wailuku anytime.

“Decent”

Banana Bungalow Maui Hostel

Jan 12, 2008

Overall, a decent place. Somewhat dirty, grungy, and unkempt, but if you're only planning on sleeping there, it's okay. We tried to stay away during the entire day. Good for young travelers, but not much else. We were disappointed with the lack of friendliness from the staff. The front desk clerk (Hans) was smoking and drinking when we checked in, and was unhelpful. He provided no additional information, and his lack of enthusiasm was awful. As he was one of the sole employees that we would see, he made our time more unpleasant. I will NOT be returning as a result of all of this.

The experience was alright, but I have definitely stayed in better hostels.

There are more private bathrooms upstairs. FYI.

Great place to stay on Mauii!!!! Everyday, there is free tours orgazised. Tours to black and red sand beach, to the top of old volcano, to snorkle,.... all that for free when you stay for the night. Only 20$ for dorms. You gotta go!!!!

I stayed at almost every hostel in Maui and although not my favorite, this one is great for meeting people, casual partying in the evening and most especially for the tours which are worth it. Perfect for the solo traveler without a car. Also to learn information and island facts/history that you might not learn on your own. It's worth checking out, but not necessarily the place to stay your whole trip.

I couldn't have been more dissapointed with this dilapidated excuse for a place to sleep. The walls are so thin (& dirty) that it felt like we were in the middle of the party that was going on downstairs. The bed had some strange powdery substance in it and I just felt so disgusted with having actually spent the night there. To top it off, they offered no compensation of any kind for the other 2 nights we had prepaid. Do NOT go here.
