“Terrific location, food good and expensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

We had heard a lot about this restaurant. The location is excellent with every table looking towards the water and the open air feel is great. The valet parking guys are friendly and efficient. Our check in was a little slow when we had to wait even though our table was ready. The server apologized twice for coming back slow and people sat next to us who came after us and had a different server were finished and gone while we were still finishing our main courses. The food presentation was excellent and the flavors were good as well. The prices were very high but overall it was a good experience. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable

“Wonderful New Year's Dining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

We chose Mama's Fish House for New Year's Eve and were not disappointed. We were given a romantic table at a window. As we expected, the prices were sky high, though worth it for a special occasion. The fish was fresh and "local" and the preparations were inventive, with Indo-Pacific though mostly Pan-Polynesian influences. We were served a delicious amuse bouche of a carrot-ginger-curry bouillabaisse in a ceramic tea cup. The papio ceviche with kaffir lime leaves, served with taro and bread fruit chips, and the opakapaka served with hamakua mushrooms were remarkable.

We had but a couple of reservations. Service was fast at first but slowed considerably later. Second, we suspected some hype about "local" when we had to ask whether the kampachi, which they substituted for the ono which had run out, was from the farm in Kona (i.e., from another island and farmed, not wild caught).

Foodies may not be wowed but they won't be let down, either.

“Best Meal in Maui”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

We LOVED Mama's Fish House. We ate there with our two adult daughters on our last night, before catching an overnight flight back to the mainland (it is about 15 minutes from the airport, about an hour from Lahaina where we were staying). The food and service were all excellent. We all got different dishes (mostly fish) and all were fantastic. There was also a starter they brought to all the tables that was an asparagus soup--also delicious. We had read Trip Advisor reviews before making the reservation that recommended the Black Pearl for dessert so we got that too and it was incredible (basically, it's a huge shell made out of crisp cookie that contains a delicious chocolate mouse covered by a smooth chocolate covering). It was just as good as people said! The atmosphere is beautiful and fun--open air but enclosed, all wood designs. It is expensive but we thought the experience was well worth it.

“The best on Maui!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

Mama's Fish House is an important piece of our Maui vacation each year. The atmosphere is true Hawaiian, the fish is the freshest and of the finest quality, and the service is the finest anywhere! This year I chose fresh Ahi grilled with peppercorns, and my husband had mahimahi. Salads are outstanding, however, my husband thought the flavor of his tomato and Kula onion salad was overwhelmed by a very strong blue cheese. For desert, my Polynesian Pearl, a chocolate mousse with chocolate ganache
And lilllikoi filling on a pastry seashell was almost too pretty to eat, and too yummy to leave a single crumb on the plate! End your meal with a French press Hawaiian coffee and relax in the cool Maui breeze - Mama's is an all round fabulous experience!

“Over rated and over priced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

This was our last meal on the island and I had heard and read so many reviews I expected more. The restaurant is VERY large and probably serves over 200 people. I am a foodie and was over whelmed by the menu. We needed our server to explain most of the menu. Which she did excellently. We selected three courses. We were rushed through each course with the other appearing before we had a chance to finish the last. What happened to the slow island pace? Our food was good but didn't justify the prices we paid. $15 for an "average" french onion soup? There are other restaurants on Maui where you can get a great meal in an intimate setting, slower paced, local line caught fish and without feeling like you are eating at a Dave and Busters.
