“It is very difficult to describe Mama's in words”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2012

Mama's is a total sensory experience. The setting is the first thing that wraps itself around your mind and then the experience just goes on from there. The setting, service and were all superior.
Yes, it expensive. I have spent as much on the mainland.

“Wonderful setting, but food, though good was not wow...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2012

Caveat: we live in Manhattan and have traveled and eaten at amazing fresh seafood restaurants. Having said that, we were in Maui 4 years ago and set the food from that trip as our basis for comparison (didn't eat at mama's then).
My husband and I were very excited about this dinner. The sample tomato and ginger soup was really amazing - wish it came in a bowl and not the shot glass. We ordered the Kampuchi ceviche appetizer w/ onions, mango, lime - tart and very fresh. lobster guacamole was something different.
Then came the entrees - the macadamia crusted lobster stuffed mahi mahi - great expectations, but not very moist and that it was fried (not grilled) took away from the freshness - at $55, that hurt. Also got the swordfish with papaya n coconut - again good but not wow. Overall, disappointed after the build up. The location and service were wonderful.

“We knew what to expect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2012

Okay, first things first. Mama's is expensive. Not in a "food is to die for so it's okay" kind of way. It's just expensive as in $120 lunch for 2 (before tip) -- salad, appetizer and one drink each. But -- and this is important -- if you understand that going in, you will enjoy it. The food -- if not the best I've ever had -- was very good. Wonderfully fresh sashimi. Salads were certainly a cut above most. Service was very good. And the location is stunning. We had a very relaxed meal before flying home, enjoying some of the best ocean scenery on Maui. I wouldn't dine here all the time, but it's worth a splurge.

“A perfect dining experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2012

This is one of our favorite restaurants in the world. We were there yesterday and cannot believe how the many, many invisible and visible people consistently create the most wonderful dining experience. Every piece of the complicated puzzle that equates to a perfect dining experience is magically in place every time we have dined here. Too bad we live outside of Boston and can only enjoy this once a year. A must try if visiting Maui! Thank you and we will be back next year.

“Best meal on maui”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2012

There is nothing that can be said that hasn't been already. All of the food here is excellent. The view is decent, although at night you can't see much other than the park setting in front of the ocean. The food here is so good that we ate here the first weekend and the last weekend of our stay. We ordered all kinds of different appetizers and fish entrees and they were all excellent. The drinks here are a bit subpar for the cost. This place is very busy, so be sure to make a reservation. Wait for a window table, it is worth it just for the nice breeze if anything else. This is not the cheapest place on the island, but definitely one of the best.
