“Relaxing getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2012

Rooms were recently renovated, clean and extremeley comfortable. Landscaping and common pool area is well maintained by Marty and Banyan Tree Staff. I appreciate that it is a retreat away from all the busy tourist areas, but a close 20 minute drive to the beaches near the big hotels. The huge kitchen is a joy to entertain large groups, and the new gazebo near the pool is the perfect place for sunset cocktails and relaxing with good friends. Wonderful job by Marty and family to create a true island oasis!

Wonderful experience staying at The Banyan Tree House over Memorial weekend. It was as comfortable as staying in a friends home. Huge kitchen allowed for preparation of a dinner for 15 people. Great area around the pool to relax, read, and enjoy a glass of wine. Only 10 minutes from the great little town of Makawau, which has a small gourmet grocery store with everything you could want for breakfast, a picnic or dinner, including a wonderful wine collection. Off the beaten track and away from tourists-highly recommended if you want to have a relaxing vacation away from the crowds.

Room Tip: Recommend going with a small group of friends or family so that you can reserve the 3 bedrooms in th...

An extraoridnary Maui experience celebrating the history of plantation owners in an authentic and soulful old but well maintained home of the Baldwins (the street is named after them). No modern over-manicured sterile chain hotel. This is the real thing. I loved it.

We had the good fortune to be invited to record the Transit of Venus on June 5th 2012. This was a very difficult project requiring many hours atop Haleakala where the observatories are located. After each stressful day at the summit we could not wait to return to the rejuvenating peaceful environment of our bungalow at Banyan Tree House. Each morning we awoke to the gentle chirping of birds, the sweet aroma of the garden and our breakfast of muffins and fresh fruit. The staff went to great lengths to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. The town, a short walk from our room, had a variety of excellent restaurants, shops and bakeries.
The rooms were clean, comfortable, spacious and bright, a perfect place to relax and unwind. I look forward to returning and picking up where I left off. Thank you Marty !

Room Tip: Each bungalow is unique, offering its own charm and personality. We has several in our party and eve...

A nice B&B if you want to be off beaten track. It's convenient to drive anywhere upcountry. Quiet and rooms are reasonable size. Big downside is you can hear everyone coming and going at night so if you have noisy neighbors, you can hear all conversations. Big disappointment was the "breakfast" delivered outside room everyday. English muffins, yogurts and fruit. We had to do our own dishes as no dishes were brought with breakfast. Even worse was our trash was never taken from our room and we were there 4 days. While others have said Marty was warm and personable, he barely said hello to us and it felt like we were bothering him when went to ask him a question.

We left weather well below zero, and were delighted to find ourselves in the lovely garden setting of Banyan Tree. The colors, flowers and pool were nurturing to our winter souls. We explored much of the beautiful island of Maui, but felt like we were coming home as our day trips concluded. One feature we looked for was a pool, and to find that without the busyness of a big resort was great. We took advantage of having our own kitchen making dinner at home several evenings and enjoying the wonderful fresh organic fruits and vegetables readily available at nearby farm stands. We would certainly stay here again when we return to Maui.

Room Tip: Great pool big enough to actually swim, and the hottub was a relaxaing bonus after long days of sigh...

The owner of this establishment, Marty, is kind and personable. That warmth resonates throughout the establishment. Staying in the common areas such as Lahaina or Wailea are great if you want a vacation in a can. But if you want a retreat nearby one of the most incredible national parks in the U.S., the Banyan Tree House is the way to go. The price is reasonable, the staff is excellent, the views of the eastern shoreline are magnificent, the rooms are clean and unique, the beds are comfortable, and there is no way to have an unpleasant stay. The town of Makawao has great restaurants and is on the way to Haleakala. Do yourself a favor and avoid the overpriced nonsense that attracts most. Stay at the Banyan Tree House.

Room Tip: You cannot choose poorly.
