Boat – perfect size. We were able to walk around, sit where we wanted, pose for pictures and simply relax. There were about two dozen passengers on our trip, but even if there were another dozen more, it still would have been comfortable and roomy. Two bathrooms (never a wait), two fresh water shower hoses, a slide, several different areas to sit and easy access in & out of the water.
Hint #1 – Read the reviews from some of the larger (100+ passenger) boats. They can get quite crowded and we could see that when passing them in the ocean. For us, having the space to walk around and sit anywhere was important.
Seasickness – My wife is susceptible, but it was no problem on this boat. When we hit a rough patch of waves on the way out, the captain slowed down until the ship was rocking less.
Bathrooms (heads) – As with all boats this size, the toilets are a challenge to flush. There is a manual pump and device to fill and flush. More than once, the crew had to help, but they were nice about it and took care of it right away.
Food – this was one of the few areas that could have been a tad better. They just serve sandwiches, but the food was good and plentiful. No lines to wait in. Other ships serve grilled food, which would have been nicer, but after an hour or so of snorkeling, anything is welcome.
Molokini – this boat stopped at what seemed to be a good spot, but who knows. I was totally happy. They don’t care how far you stray from the boat. We swam all over the place. The fish were colorful and plentiful. The water was crystal clear.
Turtle Town – we saw several turtles. That is an amazing experience. They are so large, yet so peaceful and graceful.
Hint #2 – if you can’t find any turtles, look above water for a group of frantic and excited humans, then swim over there.
Extras – They are upfront about the cost of snuba, photos and wet suits. You can rent the wet suits to stay warmer. Apparently the water is cooler than the Maui beaches, but my wife (who is a freezy-cat) did not need anything but the simple rash guard that we wore.
Hint #3 - Remember to bring about $10 per person as a tip. The crew deserves it for the great job they do.
Crew – They were all young but they were professional and knew what they were doing. They were very friendly and all enjoyed chatting with the guests. They were also very attentive with drinks and food. They were very helpful with equipment and getting everyone started. The crew was very patient and accommodating to people who either were apprehensive or had physical challenges.
Rental equipment – We brought our own stuff. We brought masks and snorkels from home and rented fins at Snorkel Bob’s. Although we didn’t use their rental equipment, it seemed fine. They provide anti-fog spray and have two shower hoses with fresh water to rinse off afterward.
Overall - I liked the relaxed attitude. We were never rushed, never had to wait in line, never had to fight for a seat. The trip back to the harbor was very relaxing. Everyone snorkeled until they were done. I highly recommend the Lani Kai.
